Estimates of China’s Covid deaths by researchers around the world say that: ”Covid may have killed more than 1.4 million people in China from Dec. 16 to Jan. 19 — or more deaths in a single month than the U.S. has recorded throughout the pandemic.” This is more realistic.

BEIJING (AP) — China reported Thursday that 239 people died from COVID-19 in June in a significant uptick months after it lifted most containment measures.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention had reported 164 deaths in May and none at all in April and March.

China started employing a “zero-COVID” containment strategy in early 2020 and credits the strict lockdowns, quarantines, border closures and compulsory mass testing with significantly saving lives.

But the measures were lifted suddenly in December with little preparation, leading to a final surge in which about 60,000 people died, according to the official toll. Deaths this year peaked in January and February, hitting a high of 4,273 on Jan, 4, but then declined gradually to zero on Feb. 23, according to the Chinese CDC.

Chinese health officials didn’t say whether they expect the trend to continue or if they would recommend for preventative measures to be restored.

Two of the deaths in June were from respiratory failure caused by infection, while the CDC said the others involved underlying conditions. Those can include diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and other chronic illnesses.

Between Jan. 3, 2020, and July 5, 2023, China reported 99,292,081 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 121,490 deaths to the World Health Organization.

Experts estimate that many hundreds of thousands of people, perhaps more, may have died in China — far higher than the official toll, but still a significantly lower death rate than in the United States and Europe.

BEIJING, Aug 25 (Reuters) - China's abrupt move to dismantle its strict COVID-19 regime, which unleashed the virus onto its 1.4 billion residents, could have led to nearly 2 million excess deaths in the following two months, a new U.S. study shows.

The study by the federally funded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle was taken from a sample of mortality data published by some universities in China and internet searches.

It found an estimated 1.87 million excess deaths from all causes occurred among people over 30 years of age between December 2022 and January 2023, and were observed in all provinces in mainland China except Tibet.

China's decision last December to end the three-year zero-COVID policy, which included mass-testing and stringent and persistent quarantine lockdowns, led to a massive surge in hospitalizations and deaths that health experts say were largely unreported by the government.

Chinese health authorities are calling for vigilance over the holidays as the country braces for a rise of Covid-19 cases caused by JN.1, a new variant of the coronavirus dominating in the United States and spreading rapidly elsewhere.

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said earlier this month that JN.1 was first detected in the US in September and although it was likely to be more transmissible than other variants, it did not appear to cause more severe illnesses.

In China, the most prevalent variant is EG.5 but health authorities are expecting a rise in JN.1 because of an increase in imported cases, as well as mass travel over the Lunar New Year holidays in early February.

However, there is a possibility of a rebound in the COVID-19 infection epidemic in China in January, Chinese health authorities said on Sunday, China-based Global Times reported.

Addressing a press briefing, National Health Commission spokesperson Mi Feng said that the number of patients received at fever clinics in health institutions across China has witnessed a fluctuating downward trend. Japanese researchers have found that all variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid, were in fact made in a laboratory.

The study, led by Japanese professors Atsuki Tanaka and Takayuki Miyazawa of Osaka Medical University and Kyoto University, sought to trace the historical evolution of the omicron variant of the virus.


To trace the variant’s origins, Tanaka and Miyazawa wrote in a new paper titled “Unnaturalness in the Evolution Process of the SARS-CoV-2 variants and the possibility of deliberate natural selection”, they studied viral sequences found “in the wild” and deposited in public databases.

The researchers said they found around 100 separate omicron subvariants that could not conceivably have arisen through natural processes.

The existence of these variants seems to provide definitive proof of large-scale lab creation of Covid viruses, Tanaka and Miyazawa wrote.

The COVID-19 variant JN.1 shows no notable changes from the EG.5 variant in terms of the severity of symptoms it can cause, said the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) on Thursday.

The JN.1 variant is found to be responsible for a growing proportion of infections in the Chinese mainland, but most cases are asymptomatic or mild, said Peng Zhibin, a respiratory disease expert with the China CDC.

COVID-19 infections are at a relatively low level in China, although there are signs of a modest rise recently, said experts, citing surveillance data.

However, they warn that infections could climb slightly around the time of the upcoming Spring Festival as large-scale mobility is expected during the holidays and other factors are at play.

Flu remains the predominant acute respiratory disease on the mainland, according to experts, noting that there has been a recent spike in infections caused by influenza B virus.

Mi Feng, a spokesperson for the National Health Commission, warned of the heightened risks of contracting respiratory diseases during the festive season and advised people to take personal protective measures, including wearing masks when traveling and maintaining good hygiene habits.

New documents strengthen—perhaps conclusively—the lab-leak hypothesis of Covid-19’s origins.

he day is growing ever closer when Washington may have to add to its agenda with Beijing a nettlesome item it has long sought to avoid: the increasingly likely fact that China let the SARS2 virus escape from the Wuhan lab where it was concocted, setting off the Covid-19 pandemic that killed some 7 million people globally and wrought untold economic havoc.

New documents may explain why no one has been able to find the SARS2 virus (aka SARS-CoV-2) infesting a colony of bats, from which it might have jumped to people. The reason would be that the virus has never existed in the natural world. Documents obtained by U.S. Right to Know, a health advocacy group, provide a recipe for assembling SARS-type viruses from six synthetic pieces of DNA designed to be a consensus sequence—the genetically most infectious form—of viruses related to SARS1, the bat virus that caused the minor epidemic of 2002. The probative weight of the recipe is that prior independent evidence already pointed to SARS2 having just such a six-section structure.

The documents unearthed by U.S. Right to Know, and analyzed by its reporter Emily Kopp, include drafts and planning materials for the already-known DEFUSE proposal, an application to DARPA, a Pentagon research agency, for a $14 million grant to enhance SARS-like bat viruses.

Four years after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Chinese city of Wuhan, what do we know about the origin of the SARSCOV2 virus?

We were presented at the outset with two competing theories: natural-origin spillover from animals to humans, and accidental lab leak. And at the outset, a cadre of elite scientists passionately argued that the evidence overwhelmingly favored a natural origin. With comparable fervor, they dismissed the possibility that SARSCOV2 leaked from a lab as a “conspiracy theory.”

With a few notable exceptions, mainstream media outlets and the larger scientific community vehemently nodded in agreement. NPR said the lab-leak theory was “debunked,” Vanity Fair called it a “right-wing coronavirus conspiracy,” and Facebook banned posts suggesting the virus may have been manufactured in a lab.

Four years later that narrative has begun to crack—and rightly so.

It was always a lie; one of the most consequential lies of the 21st century. Like all great lies it perfectly inverted the truth: the evidence supporting natural spillover has always been thin. Conversely, the evidence pointing to a lab leak has always been compelling and has grown substantially more persuasive with time.

A coalition of elite scientists and complicit media outlets have proven remarkably effective in suppressing the truth for this long. But in recent months, as congressional investigations have intensified, honest scientists and journalists have begun challenging the false consensus with greater alacrity as new revelations have tipped the scales toward lab leak even further.

Using serum samples routinely collected in 9144 adults from a French general population-based cohort, 353 participants with a positive anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG test were identified. Notably, 13 participants with positive ELISA-S had been sampled between 5 November 2019 and 30 January 2020 and were confirmed by neutralizing antibodies testing. In these positive subjects, the authors identified symptoms, a history of possible exposure or specific events compatible with early SARS-CoV-2 infection [9].

Lombardy was the first Italian region affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, with a death rate almost six times higher than in the rest of the country. A recent large phylogenetic study on 346 SARS-CoV-2 patients in Lombardy allowed for the identification of seven SARS-CoV-2 lineages and the presence of local transmission clusters within three of them, suggesting that the virus was circulating undetected for some time before first detection and confirming the central role of Lombardy in the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic [19]. Similar conclusions were reached in a previous report in a smaller number of sequenced samples [20]. In contrast, no evidence of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA was found in 1581 respiratory samples collected in the framework of influenza surveillance between October 2019 and February 2020 in Lombardy [21]. Nonetheless, the presence of neutralizing antibodies in five blood donors collected at the beginning of February in the Lodi Red Zone, where the outbreak started, was reported by the same authors [22].
