(CNN) For the first time, a US patient has contracted novel coronavirus with no clue as to where it came from.
The California patient didn't travel anywhere known to have the virus, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. And the patient wasn't exposed to anyone known to be infected.
That means this could be the first US case of "community spread" of the virus.
This case is significant, Dr. Dean Blumberg, an infectious disease specialist at UC Davis Medical Center, told CNN affiliate KCRA.
"That suggests that the virus is out there in the community, and that means pretty much that everybody's at risk," he said. "We don't know who might be carrying it. We don't know who we can get it from."
While it's not clear who the patient got the virus from, "that other person probably exposed other people," Blumberg said.
"And you have to realize that this virus is so new, that none of us have any immunity to it. So, anybody who's exposed is at high risk of getting infected with this."

A not very good COVID-19 milestone may have been hit - we have what appears to be the first case of unknown path of domestic transmission. The patient in CA has not been to China, and has not had any contact with any known infected person. The concern of course is not only that this specific patient may have infected others, but that the unknown person that transmitted the disease to this patient is out there further transmitting.
The fear of course, is that we may have a modern day "Typhoid Mary" amongst us, this time in CA rather than NY.
The news contributed in sending the Dow reeling, down nearly -800 pts at the open, and now at -650 pts down as I pen this.

Time to go to Sam's Club and stock up on chicken tomato soup, bleach, and oodles of noodles.

Not mine. We know of substantial unknown path local transmission in Italy & Iran for instance, and I suspect it's taking place in some other of the now 50 countries & territories where the virus present. This sets my CT sense tingling................

I'd say buy some surgical masks too, but there's none to be had. I checked and EVERY store is sold out. Same with Amazon.

I would throw in some gatorade into that mix
We shouldn't be crass about this but worry about the most vulnerable among us.
This virus, if it takes-off, may make a good argument for single-payer (or similar) universal healthcare. Protecting yourself means nothing if the guy sitting next to you on the bus or el isn't getting adequate healthcare. The very structure of our healthcare system enables the spread of the virus. People face high deductibles at the beginning of the calendar year, so they're less likely to seek necessary medical treatment.
The Coronavirus hit at the worst possible time for the United States.
The key word is "potential". That's what makes it daunting. Nothing to do but wait & see. But if this continues to grown globally, there's really no way to keep it out. It will simply have to run its course. This is potentially a huge deal. It means the virus is endemic here in the US.
Especially bad that this was reported at almost the EXACT SAME TIME as Trump was giving his press conference....and it wasn’t even mentioned.
We had a gift- a month or two to fully prepare for this virus. Trump squandered it, like he does everything.

It should make us reflect on affordable universal healthcare. If not for purely humanitarian reasons, then for self-preservation. You're only going to be as healthy as the guy sitting next to you on the bus & el.Seems like this might lead to some reflection on how our present administration has failed us.
Bet it won’t though, at least among some people.

Therefore my reference to a possible "Typhoid Mary" amongst us. It will all come down to how communicative the disease is. There is/was a spreader out there. We need to see how easy or difficult it is the catch. That (bolded above) is the scary part, one may be a carrier of (able to transmit) the virus without ever showing symptoms.

Those masks really wont help against catching the virus so dont bother with them.
