I see these goddamned ads all the time, is it just an anti-union group or is it something a little more nuanced?
I agree with their premise that, I shouldn't be forced to join a union in order to be employed at a certain place of business.
When I was looking for a job a while back, just to test the waters, I looked at working for the railroad here.
Well, you have to join one of the two unions with a 60 day time frame.

Why?
If I got the job without the union and don't see a need to be in a union.
Not to mention jobs that become unionized after you become employed at a business.

You should never be forced to join and pay dues to a union, if you don't want to.

It was a regulatory rule by the federal labor board.
Edit: not the fed labor board but the National Mediation Board.

Link to the story.
Obama Changes Rule On Union Elections

Basically, under the old rules, if there were 10,000 employees and only 4000 bothered to vote.
Then the vote for unionization would fail, essentially counting those 6000 non votes as no.

Now in the same scenario, however those 4,000 vote is the decider of whether or not a union is established.

It's really, really crappy if you ask me.

I definately think there is a natural human instinct to oppose concentrated power: big government, big labor, and big business all can be very hazardous to a "liberal" society

I definately think left-libertarians and modern libertarians have a lot in common. It's a weird phenomenon that libertarianism was claimed by the right in modern America. Oh well, id much rather work on policy with libertarians than conservatives or state socialists or authoritarian bureaucrats/theocrats.

I think the designation of right for libertarianism is wrong, if you closely examine the policy of both Republicans and Democrats, they both heavily resemble an underlying economic fascist approach(sometimes light, sometimes heavy).
Which would designate both of them as right leaning philosophies.

They are both somewhat nationalistic, as well.

Well, I understand that libertarianism is not a specific "wing" if you will of the political spectrum. I usually think of economic/social on the left/right and authoritarian vs anarchism(hard libertarianism) on a vertical axis. In that case, the most propagated libertarianism is right wing libertarianism ala Ayn Rand(who I dont really like to be honest), but I definately see who you are saying, it just appears to most people that libertarianism is a right-wing philosophy.

Yea I won't argue with that.

I think Rand started the philosophy which has been improved upon later.
Hearing some of the new Randians beliefs explained are a lot better than the hard coldness Rand herself proclaimed.

My main beef with Ayn Rand(which im sure 'vulgar' libertarians, which is what i call them because they hijacked the terms meaning, can clarify) is her psychotic hatred of altruism and why she defends selfishness as a virtue. And shes an objectivist.

Which makes lol.

I don't think altruism should be hated, quite the opposite I think it should be exalted.
However, I do think the feeling good aspect should be realized as having some personal value, like physical property.

Her explanation of selfishness was incredibly crappy.
The new Randians have redefined it to allow people to better understand, I think.
It's now called, long term rational self interest.

Which carries a lot of explaining with it.

But still, objectivism? She's a loon. Great author, I just dont agree with her philosophy. That's where I am not the run-of-the-mill college stereotype, I read all types of literature-- I know personally anarchists, socialists, conservatives, liberals, independents, libertarians(left and right :D) etc and I discuss with them all. I truly believe that a marketplace of ideas creates the strongest ideas.

P.s. Glenn Beck is the single biggest destroyer of civil discourse and the marketplace of ideas that results. I'm watching him at the moment. Man took what like 1 class at Yale then dropped out? Bleh.

It is true that being a complete objectivist is almost impossible.

I think that things like objectivism should be left to the legislative and financial sphere.
Emotional hyperbole is dangerous in those areas.

I try to avoid people like him for information.
Way to much hyperbole and exaggeration of facts.

I use Cato mostly, sometimes reason although the comments section under the stories are fill with some jackassery.

The benefit of Cato is that a great many of their fellows are former congressional staffers and/or have worked in government bureaucracy at high levels.

The Cato Institute

Reason Magazine

I try to avoid Mises because, although I agree with many of their beliefs, they tend to exaggerate some things.
