Putin planned his invasion of Ukraine for Trump's 2nd term but it did not work out that way much to Russia's dismay. U.S weapons sent by Biden have killed 100's of 1000's of Russian invaders. New US measures designed to derail completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline from Russia to Germany will not go into effect until after 29 December as President Donald Trump vetoed the broader legislation of which the sanctions formed part.

The proposed sanctions would narrowly target companies building the offshore portion of the near-complete 55bn m³/yr Nord Stream 2, as well as entities that provide underwriting and insurance to pipe-laying vessels and facilitate ship retrofitting and upgrading. The sanctions also could apply to any entity that "provided services for the testing, inspection or certification" of the pipeline.

They don't have to conquer Ukraine. They just have to put Ukraine in a position where they can no longer effectively fight and force them to peace on Russian terms, which basically means the entirety of Ukraine east of Dniper to Russia.

Russia’s goal was to conquer all of Ukraine. They have already failed to achieve that goal.

Russia would at least like to conquer Odessa so they can control the entire north coast of the Black Sea and launch an invasion into Moldova. So far they are failing to achieve that goal as well.

Perhaps if they got Ukraine to only give up territory that Russia already controls then Russia could pretend that it was a victory, but that would be some pretty heavy spin.

Yet the Russians have enough forces that even while fighting in Kursk, they've been able to make advances in the East. Russia would rather have Crimea than Kursk.

Small advances achieved at great cost.

The war in Ukraine is still serving to keep Russia too busy to think about invading the EU.

Your position has no basis in reality. There isn't a universe where Ukraine outlasts Russia, definitely no ours with Trump in the White House cutting them off.

Ukraine has done a pretty good job of holding their own so far.

Even if Ukraine really is destined to lose one day, the longer they hold out, the better off the rest of the world will be.

Russia can afford the losses. Ukraine can't. Ukraine's only advantage comes from the superior technology it is getting from the US and NATO. When Trump cuts Ukraine off, that advantage will disappear.

Ukraine can get weapons from the EU. Germany in particular might think about giving Ukraine more weapons if it looks like they are on the verge of collapse.

How many years would it take Ukraine to force Russia to capitulate?

Making Russia capitulate is not the goal. Keeping Russia bogged down in never-ending war so they can’t invade the EU is the goal.
