In their infinite capacity to make the wrong choice, the good voters in California passed Prop 47 ten years ago. It loosened the penalties for petty crime which caused an explosion of petty crime. Go figure.

There's a new prop drive strengthen the penalties back. California Dems tried to block it but couldn't. So they pulled out the stops and brought in the dirty tricks.

It's like the Dems care more about criminals than law-abiding citizens. And they won't allow any reform until pushed into it, and only under their terms.



California Democrats are playing "dirty tricks" in response to bipartisan efforts to place a measure to reform Proposition 47 on the November ballot in favor of other public safety bills, officials said.

Prop 47, a voter-approved initiative passed in 2014, loosened the penalties for drug and theft crimes in California and has been blamed for California's rampant theft problems. Californians for Safer Communities, a bipartisan group made up of law enforcement, elected officials and businesses, said it has collected more than 900,000 signatures in support of the proposed amendment to reform Prop 47 in order to increase penalties for criminals.

 
You're doing a piss poor job defining "dirty tricks" and I suspect it's because the democratic process itself frightens you due to your yearning for dictatorial decrees as a solution.
I am a Democrat myself and I want to see Prop 47 reformed and will support measures which help accomplish that.
So please tell us what it is about the process that you see as "dirty tricks"?

Drug laws drove prices up so junkies had to steal. Absent the drug laws a junkie could support their habit collecting cans.

Not all laws are well planned or well written.
Regardless of the original intent of Prop 47, it is a poorly written law and the loopholes are big enough to drive a major assault through...or a train.
 
I get what you're saying. Here's what I'm saying.

I'm at the market maybe 30 minutes a week. I see about 1 theft per 1-2 weeks. Assuming $50 was stolen, that's about a dollar a minute.

The store is open 15 hours or 900 minutes a day. That's 328,500 minutes a year.

Of course no one person is stealing $300K from the store. But I wouldn't be surprised if their losses are at least in the tens and probably more like in the hundreds of thousands every year.

And it wouldn't be $40K per year to incarcerate someone in the county jail for petty theft.

So I'm going to pay either way. Either in higher costs at the store (the cost of shoplifting gets passed on to the paying customers), or in increased policing and incarceration.

My point is that if people believe there will be negative consequences, they will stop. See the Broken Window theory. And if they see everyone else pilfering and just walking out with no consequences, they might think, not unreasonably, "why not me?" and the problem will likely get worse.

We need to change the culture back to one where people generally follow the law. That means policing the little stuff.

You are clearly confused. I am not a Republican. Trump, however, was a Democrat from 1964 until 2012. Once again demonstrating that all Democrats, including former Democrats, are criminals.

FYI, it happened again last night.

I'm standing in line at the safeway when the emergency bell rings. I look over at the clerk and he just rolls his eyes and motions everyone to stay put. A few seconds later the alarm stops.

What was the"emergency"? Some scumbucket shoplifter filled up a bag of groceries and simply walked out the emergency exit.
