LOS ANGELES, Sept 27 (Reuters) - California on Monday became the eighth, and by far the largest, U.S. state to make universal distribution of vote-by-mail ballots permanent, a practice that became more widespread during the COVID-19-plagued 2020 election cycle.

The measure requiring mail-in ballots to be routinely sent to every active registered voter from now on was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom as the centerpiece of a package of bills aimed at improving the state's overall election system.

Awesome!
Id like every state to do this
Every state should also pass voter ID bills as long as its actually about VOTER ID and outlaw gerrymandering or have it done by multiple outside orgs

all current government accepted IDs should be valid for voting and if one isn't free one needs to be free and made readily available at many places including the polling place.
If the bills were actually based on ID we could have a nationwide vote by mail and voter id laws next year IMO

but for some strange reason so many Voter ID bills
limit early voting
limit mail voting
limit absentee voting
redraw districts
clos and combined polling place
limit days you can vote
outlaw bussing
etc etc . . .why?

I hope they do it well. I think that Mail-In should be standard across the 50 States, and Colorado has the best system of them all. So hopefully, CA does this well too. When the system is constructed properly, it is clearly the superior voting method.

AGreed!

that is a valid point and critical, it does have to be done properly and well
if it's not i will gladly criticize it for its mistakes and errors but not just because it is mail in like the extremists will

Yup, that's why I endorse other states adopting Colorado's system. It's established and proven, and it's pretty much the gold standard for mail-in systems.

Overall, I think every state should have a mail-in system. Unfortunately, the ones that are going to adopt them are the ones that are the least problematic in terms of voter-turnout-suppression laws.

Excellent. You can still vote in person if you want.

Sadly.

I agree and I also admit i was ignorant of it (Colorado's system) until covid happened

In general so true
Just like with NORMAL voter ID or regulating gerrymandering which IMO is a HUGE problem that im not sure how to fix. While currently, the republicans seem most guilty of this its NOT a right left issue both sides do it and how do we get congress to fix something they dont REALLY want to since they use it as a tool.

Ahhh, there's the rub. It's also why I call them the Republocrats. There's differing aspects of the Main Party, but they both engage in these tactics and do everything they can to suppress political competition and keep power.

Yep I almost wish there was like ANOTHER checks and balances branch of government to help with issues like that but then how long before the branch is corrupt and plays the game too?
a presidential cycle at best? lol

just seems like a flaw that a lot of things congress gets to decide on is only for them and the people will get screwed . . like their salaries, their health care, district lines etc

Good for them, more states should follow suit.
Just too damn lazy to show up, in person, with identification to vote. A system that has been secure and successful forever. Working within that scenario I hate food shopping, standing in line at the bank, or waiting in the doctor's office. A trip to the emergency room can be a nightmare and how much fun is it to deal with DMV?
All of these things are inconvenient and just like your mail-in voting scheme should be corrected by a similar stay-at-home system. God forbid any lives are the least bit difficult. I want to stay home in my Barkalounger waiting for everyone to cater to me. LOL

Based on what facts?

- Just renewed by drivers license from home. Went to the DMV site. Less than a week my license showed up.
- Do most of my banking from home through secured connections.
- Voted by mail in the last election. Through the election website I could follow when the ballot was processed.

Some people are not able to stand in line to vote for various reasons. Don't they have a right to vote?

Hmmm grocery stores now offer delivery. Even liquor can be delivered. I haven't personally been inside my bank for over two years, although I have used the drive thru ATM possibly 4-5 times. I normally do my DMV stuff online but this year my vehicle had a recall so I spent about 15 minutes in person to turn in the recall paperwork.

So clearly there are already many set up.

Nope, I think we should make voting a very difficult process. Run a mile, cross a stream, and fight off rabid coyotes before they hand you a ballot. Voting should only be done by those who are willing to sacrifice to do it.

Those few companies offering such services are doing so voluntarily for business reasons (profit). I am suggesting that it be mandatory, like early voting, mail-in voting, and absentee voting. Once again catering to those that don't want to make any effort to. I know it is a silly position, just having some fun with a voting system I don't want to see changed and have no faith in.

this isn't mandatory 🤷‍♂️
and you still haven't offered anything that makes it a fact that this is catering to those that dont want to make any effort lol

You're probably right. It is directed more to the liberal voter that was always too lazy to make the effort but now that it will be a piece of cake, the left gets a bunch of new votes. Corrupt politicians are always conniving.

Aaaaand another claim that has zero facts to make it true LMAO 0-3

I don't completly agree with your "don't want to make any effort". They voted. You just don't like the method used.

Is it acceptable to have to wait for hours to vote in person? That does happen sometimes.

Well you can have your shopping delivered and do you banking online. But you need to be physically present, at this point, for a doctor to evaluate you. So you may need to do that. You can do much of what is necessary with the DMV online as well.

I've got a dumb question or two. If you get a mail in ballot and your spouse or partner uses force to cause you to fill it out in a way you would not otherwise choose is that a lawful vote? If your partner fills out your ballot for you and you don't know what's on the ballot is that a legitimate vote? If someone comes by your house and coerces you into signing the affidavit then takes your ballot and fills it out themselves is that a legitimate vote? If you are mentally incompetent due to dementia and your caregiver has you sign the affidavit and then fills out the ballot for you is that a legitimate vote? Without regard to whether or not any of these scenarios actually occur, is there a mechanism by which a mail in ballot would prevent a coerced or uninformed vote to be cast, assuming one believes that a coerced or uninformed vote should be illegal?
