Bush, Romney not expected to support Trump, NYT reports

Not unexpected, especially with Romney, but this is bad news for Trump. It would be a welcome sight to see at least some Republicans find their spines and oppose the president.

Many longtime Republican officials distanced themselves from Trump during his 2016 campaign and while some have made their peace with the president, others have kept their distance. Now, with reelection approaching, it appears that many of those same Republicans are unlikely to change their minds -- even though Trump is the incumbent.

A number of Republicans, according to The Times, are considering whether to go to a third-party candidate or openly endorse Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Biden, meanwhile, reportedly intends to roll out a “Republicans for Biden” coalition in the campaign after he has consolidated his support from his own party.

Romney hates Trump so there's no surprise there.

If President Bush doesn't endorse Trump, that could do a lot of damage. It's a signal for real republicans to not vote for Trump.

I'm not sure what impact this will have. Former President Bush didn't endorse Trump in 2016, so maybe if he doesn't in the fall, this won't be much of a surprise.

As for Romney, I think he and his opinions are irrelevant now that he's shown who and what he really is.

Wow that is quite a bit of investigative reporting by the NYT. In other breaking news I had breakfast today.

Colin Powell has thrown his support behind Biden. I think a lot of mainstream, “normal” Republicans are seeing this. People need someone to tell them where to squat and lean. Maybe this will give them the push they need.

The last head of the Republican Party not endorsing the current head of the Republican Party creates a permission structure for other Republicans to follow suit.

The best example of such a “permission structure” can be seen in the ads by The Lincoln Project, in which it’s made clear that even as a Republican you can, just for now, vote for Biden as a Republican without actually being a Democrat or adopting Democratic values.

They’re really well done.

Why are his opinions irrelevant?

Romney is spineless, along with Ted Cruz and most of the republican presidential field from 2016

I agree with you about Romney's and Bush's impact, but if Bush gets vocal it could do some damage.

I'm more interested in the unnamed Republicans who are contemplating third party or openly endorsing Biden; as well Biden's planned "Republicans for Biden" coalition. "Democrats for Reagan" worked well.

Trumps intraparty approval is in the high 90s.

No one likes Bush, Bush was a spineless pu$$y who let the media walk all over him, they lied about his air national guard service and even forged documents to support said lies, he allowed himself to be scapegoated for Katrina response, he started wars he had no intention of allowing the military to win, and on top of all that he didnt even appoint anti-abortion absolutists to the Supreme Court.

No one in the GOP will stray from GEOTUS on Bush’s behalf.

You don’t need to tear away a huge number of Republicans to deny Trump a second term. I’m well aware that a giant portion of the GOP is so far down the cult hole that nothing matters to them. But if just 6% of Republicans can be convinced to vote for Biden instead of third party or not voting at all, that would be devastating to trump.

Did you really just call trump “God Emperor of the United States?”

I’m sure they’ll find some randos somewhere who were never really republicans to claim they were. However in the social media era any time they bring up some pretender we will trace them down and doxx their entire life and that will show these fake republicans never were.

If you’re a “republican for Biden” you’re not a republican. End story. By definition if you’re not supporting the candidate you’re not a member of that group.,

All Bush getting vocal would do is proceed to make a case for why Trump is better. “Wow you hate me more then the fake news who faked your service records and you didn’t have the balls to call them fake news like I do”

6% will not vote for Biden. If you believe in 9 Month abortions and high corporate taxes and mandatory government healthcare and allowing rioting and looting In the streets then you are not a Republican

That's the way I see it, too. It's starting to look like a storybook. Biden is the nominee precisely because South Carolina blacks were split on who to choose, and Jim Clyburn gave them the little push you mention. I see the same thing happening here with Republicans who are not sure about the president.

Trump has a solid base. But how big is that really? Is it the 43% or so who consistently poll on his side, or is there a portion of that 43% who are really on the fence?

Did they support Trump in the 2016 election?

Remember, not everyone in the Republican Party is a cultist. Anywhere between 4% and 6% of Republicans have principles.

It might. But he has maintained a dignified silence all this time, so maybe he won't. I struggle to conceive of Dubya's finding Biden's platform, such as it is, attractive. Nothing will surprise me.

Opportunists, if the wind is blowing in that direction, will leap on board. Who knows what the nation's COVID status will be in November and how the current protests will be resolved?

I'm (generally) a conservative myself and would be very surprised if my fellow conservatives aren't on the side of law and order, if they aren't as distressed by looting and mayhem as I am.

I wonder who the unnamed are who are allegedly considering third party or openly endorsing Biden. They do so, I think, at their political peril.

Why are his opinions irrelevant?

I don't think many people care what Romney thinks. I don't because now I know who he is.

Who is he? Someone who actively worked against Trump in 2016 and then came sucking up in the hope of scoring Sec/State. Ugh.
