Burgalaries happen once every 15 seconds. We have a right to protect our home.

8 Surprising Home Invasion & Burglary Statistics - SafeWise

I've noticed a lot of anti-gun nuts live in a fantasy world where they believe nothing can happen to them, so they develop this idea that they do not need such a thing as a firearm. Well, if you take a look at the article you'll notice a few disturbing things.

1. Around 60 percent of burglars used forcible entry to gain access to a home. A surprising 30 percent entered home through an unlocked door, window or other opening without resorting to force.

2. The United States leads the world in occurrence of burglaries and about four burglaries occur every minute; that’s one every 15 seconds.

3. You may want to explore the benefits of a wireless home security system. That’s because roughly 25 percent of burglars reported cutting telephone or alarm wires before they broke into the home. A wireless home security system is less vulnerable because there are no wires to be cut. Wireless technology is offered by a number of leading home security companies, and it’s more affordable than you might think.

If burglaries occur that often, who is to say it cannot happen to you? In fact, it has happened to me. These criminals are smart enough to cut telephone/alarm wires and then have the audacity to kick in your door wielding god knows what as a weapon while your significant other and children sleep. So excuse me if I find the thought of banning firearms and confiscating them hard to swallow. Putting limitations on the types of firearms we can own is even more silly. If a criminal breaks into your home with a semi-automatic and all you have is a single shot at your disposal and miss....well a lot of things can play out. Crime in general is a problem is the U.S. banning and putting limitations on firearms will not bring down those numbers, hell it may increase them because criminals will have something less to worry about.

I am an anti-gun nut

Here's my question...where do you store your arsenal?

With a gun? Or by any other means at all?

Any means at all. In a city with 2 million people proper and about 3.8 million in the metro area there were only 30 murders last year.

Wow, that is amazing. And great.

See bold.

It says anyone who disagrees with you on guns is "nuts"

I don't think you really want a debate. I think you want an argument. That's nuts

If you're pro 2A then you obviously are not a anti-gun nut. Those types of people do in fact exist. They are closed minded and will not debate the topic because their mind is set.

There we go again!

Anyone who doesn't agree with you is a "nut", usually translating to insane. if you think everyone who disagrees with you, why even have a conversation.

Frankly it is obvious you are a 'pro gun nut'

Wow, that is amazing. And great.

I have no idea how Americans can tolerate such a high murder rate, Toronto with a population of 5.5 million only had 55 murders, only 27 of which were by guns. Toronto's worst year was 80 homicides with 50 by gun and that was considered an epidemic.

Yet at the same time...

Owning a gun has been linked to higher risks of homicide, suicide, and accidental death by gun.
For every time a gun is used in self-defense in the home, there are 7 assaults or murders, 11 suicide attempts, and 4 accidents involving guns in or around a home.
43 percent of homes with guns and kids have at least one unlocked firearm.
In one experiment, one third of 8-to-12-year-old boys who found a handgun pulled the trigger.
In 2014, according to FBI data, nearly eight times more people were shot and killed in arguments than by civilians trying to stop a crime.
In one survey, nearly 1 percent of Americans reported using guns to defend themselves or their property. However, a closer look at these claims found that more than half involved using guns in an aggressive manner, such as escalating an argument.
A study in Philadelphia found that the odds of an assault victim being shot were 4.5 times greater if he carried a gun. His odds of being killed were 4.2 times greater.

Bottom Line... You live by the gun the chances are higher than you die by the gun.

Every issue has multiple sides. The trick is to be open to all sides and find a balance.

I can cite BS too and call it facts.

Doesn't change the fact it's BS.

What the statistics usually dont show is that the vast majority of those murders are between criminals and/or gangs and are in mostly concentrated areas.

I feel the same way about the people that do not have the means to leave those areas and have no choice....but I only see fighting 'crime' as the (partial) solution...not more gun control. It's already illegal for felons to own guns.

There is no citation of where burglaries are happening 'every 15 seconds'. None of the other details are substantiated either.

However, if you are looking to gun ownership to solve the problem all you will likely get is a lot of stolen guns. Burglaries usually happen when no one is home, so whose going to do the shooting. Or is it true, guns really do kill people.

Why do what everyone else in the world does, lock your doors, get an alarm system, but don't go out and buy a gun so some burglar can steal it.

Well the statistics are from 2005 FBI statistics, so they are incredibly out of date, though the thing about alarm systems may be made up.

It is important in heavily-urbanised, high-populace-dense regions to have some sort of firearm to defend your home with, that's just common-sense

why would that be the case compared to living in sparsely populated rural areas?

Why? I live on the 7th floor of an apartment building. I also know there is always a heavy police presence around.

Why are the Police more preferable to a gun you can control and trust? I guess the rampant police-shootings of unarmed are irrelevant? The main reason I'd want a gun in the city is to defend myself from the police, and criminals, of course. Usually those two terms are interchangeable, though.

Well it is their job, I would rather let them deal with the situation than risk my own life. Let me know how well trying to shoot a police officer goes. If you are armed you give them a very good reason to kill you.

I would also like to see someone get to my specific apartment, considering my building is locked and has its own security.

We live in good times. The number of fatalities in intentional injuries (war, violence, state executions, etc.) is down to the 7th leading cause of death in the world. But things have not always been so good. The leading cause of death in the 20th century was people being killed by their own government. The purpose of the 2nd Amendment was, unfortunately, not to allow duck hunters or home protection from criminals but protection from government. Now perhaps that is a situation in which the cure is more harmful than the disease but the cure is one undertaken freely and voluntarily.
DEATH BY GOVERNMENT: GENOCIDE AND MASS MURDER
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democide

The trick is for government to convince people that it, government, is not the problem. And with the militarization of police and all governmental agencies, that seems unlikely.
