There's probably a multitude of reasons why the bolded is so, but I believe we've lost that "Saviour & Beacon to the World" leadership role we had coming out of the War (WWII). We no longer have physical struggles like the Dust Bowl, nor (for the most part) major military existential threats like WWII.

Modern technology, medical science, and our superior far military might have precluded existential threat. There's no real thing to bond us together anymore.

Very possible. No USSR behemoth of the eastern block to threaten us. WWII and the cold war, our very existence was in question for decades. Perhaps we and our major parties have now taken our continued existence for granted. I don't know, but it seems to me that the threads of nation, country first began to unravel during the late 1990's, picked up speed during Bush, although 9-11 gave us a couple of years of reprieve. Then gained a lot of speed under Obama and now seems to me to be traveling at supersonic speed. The U.S., political wise is becoming unraveled.

The late 1990's is when I think the growing disillusionment began to set in. At that time the two major parties made up 65% of the total electorate give or take a couple of points up or down throughout the years. Independents 30%. Today the two major parties have fallen to approximately 55% of the electorate, independents to around 42% give or take. Folks are deserting the two major parties, I don't think they care as they know they control our two party political system. Folks aren't happy with either party.

We just had one raunchy circus fit for a porn movie on Kavanaugh's nomination. This doesn't help their standing. But it shows it is party first and above everything.

Which is better than another partisan hack on the SCOTUS. One can reasonably conclude Kav is not the right person to sit on the high court. His anger toward liberals is palpable, his lack of humility bracing. He has the partisan mindset that opponents are unworthy of respect and kindness. Cavanaugh, I imply you're referring to, is a partisan hack in that he attempts to interpret The Constitution as the founders wanted it interpreted.

Here's Mitch McConnell on the Senate floor stating that all 51 GOP Senators voiced voted to proceed with Kavanugh's nomination. This was after the hearing and the agreement to a 7th FBI BI investigation

My sense of humor helps my efforts to reason with unreasonable people. I understand the refusal of some people to acknowledge the obvious.

In this case, the nomination process has absolutely, with irrefutable certainty, exposed CryBaby Kavanaugh as: 1. unsuitable to serve as a Supreme Court justice, 2. Crybaby now has a reputation damaged beyond repair.

What does the he does that even mean ? Is it the way she talks, or the sound of her voice that makes her incredibly believable ? Is that what passes for direct evidence to the Democrats and the supporters these days ?

If she really wanted to be seen as a credible witness she could simply provide relevant facts, locations and dates, witnesses but she's provided NONE of that so-far.

Lets be honest, Ford not remembering dates, times and location is not a function of her poor long term memory. It's a carefully crafted strategy most likely cooked up by her " resistance " attorney meant to deprive Kavanugh of a alibi.

Thing is, it also deprives Ford and the Democratic party of their credibility
