A week after President Barack Obama won reelection in November 2012, JD Vance, then a law student at Yale, wrote a scathing rebuke of the Republican Party’s stance on migrants and minorities, criticizing it for being “openly hostile to non-whites” and for alienating “Blacks, Latinos, [and] the youth.”

Four years later, as Vance considered a career in GOP politics, he asked a former college professor to delete the article. That professor, Brad Nelson, taught Vance at Ohio State University while Vance was an undergraduate student. After Vance graduated, Nelson asked him to contribute to a blog he ran for the non-partisan Center for World Conflict and Peace.

Nelson told CNN that during the 2016 Republican primary he agreed to delete the article at Vance’s request, so that Vance might have an easier time getting a job in Republican politics. However, the article, titled “A Blueprint for the GOP,” remains viewable on the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.

In 2012, Vance wrote:

"A significant part of Republican immigration policy centers on the possibility of deporting 12 million people (or ‘self-deporting’ them),” Vance wrote. “Think about it: we conservatives (rightly) mistrust the government to efficiently administer business loans and regulate our food supply, yet we allegedly believe that it can deport millions of unregistered aliens. The notion fails to pass the laugh test. The same can be said for too much of the party’s platform.”

THIS should make for some interesting questions in the VP debate.

After Romney lost, there was a very brief, "Man, we need to move the party away from this far right wing shit, fellas." thing going on in the Republican party. That lasted about as long as a fart in a hurricane.

Vance's flip-flopping on several key criticisms of the GOP - especially on immigration - will make for interesting debate questions.

Even Trump's position on immigration isn't unique (though perhaps its rhetoric is at times) -- comes right out of the Jeff Sessions (R-AL) playbook, written right after Romney's loss.

I guess. I don't see the point. I just want to vote and get it over with.

They did an Autopsy report right after...that was immediately torched the moment Trump came down the escalator in June of 2015.

I think it also raises an interesting question about Vance as possible POTUS....which given the two assassination attempts on Trump's life and Trump's old age is more and more likely (as Trump may not serve out a full term, if elected).

Is there any "there....ya know, there" with Vance? Or is he just an amoeba willing to assume any form that brings him political power?

I think the answer is obvious ("yes, he is").....but people should get the full picture before election day and, in the immortal words of Taylor Swift, make their own conclusions.

The plutocrats quickly realized that if they move even an inch away from Nixon’s longstanding and successful southern strategy, they were going to lose. The powerful coalition of plutocrats and racists which is today’s GOP cannot be betrayed or they will both lose. They need to hug each other tight and not let go for even an instant.

I think their new direction would have likely been to pay better lip service to the issue rather than changing their politics or policy anyway.

Vance is just like Trump. He will lie about ANYTHING.

Yeah, well.

IMO, showing any sort of sympathy or rational attitude towards immigrants and minorities, except in a transparently performative "See?!? We're not racist!!" way, does seem to be the line that even Trump cannot cross.

That said... If the MAGAites can forgive him for insulting Trump extensively before November 2016, I'm sure they will ignore this as well -- especially given his blatant racism over the past week or so.

I'm also sure he will have some pat answer for why he flipped.

I could be remembering this wrong, but I listened to an AM radio pundit for the first time in a while after Romney lost just to hear the reaction. I remember hearing a rejection of the "we lost because we've gone too far to the right" idea. Granted, this was almost twelve years ago.

Ian Ward at Politico seems to think that a lot of what we see on Vance's surface is a cover for some type of illiberal / authoritarian Catholic nationalism.

My guess is he was flopping around as a young man, and like so many of the converted, now burns with the fire of a thousand suns. As such, he's willing to choke down all sorts of lies and iniquity in the hope that some day, he and his Catholic buddies can seize total control of the US, and force people to indulge in their Handmaid's Tale world.

A President vance concerns me more than trump as POTUS.

(Trump, of course, is a train wreck whose indifference and incompetence could easily lead to implementation of much in the Heritage Project 2025. Moreover, his penchant for using the powers of the Presidency for his own malevolent purposes is "concerning".)

The Romney campaign had many problems in 2012, one of them being he pretended to be a "severe conservative" in the primaries to win over the far right skeptics that were already emboldened by the tea party victories in 2010, and he (along with others), attempted to court the birthers, including king birther Donald Trump himself, which Romney eventually "won" that endorsement. He attempted to backtrack to the middle in the general, after spending the entire GOP primaries running away from his more "moderate" record as Governor of MA.

lmao, the same morons who are still crying about Biden's "They are going to put you back in chains!" comment from 12 years ago will either completely ignore this....or cheer this on.

Worthless hypocrites, all of them.

What a hack sellout. No ethics.

It's hard to believe that anyone believed that he was a "severe conservative." He was more of a rich opportunist shape shifter. I watched the Netflix show about him, and saw a different perspective. However, my initial opinion hasn't changed a lot, though I have seen Republicans who are worse than he is.

I see a lot of never Trumpers today complain about how Romney was treated in 2012, which they claim is why the GOP voter base decided to back a lunatic conman as their next nominee (which is complete bullshit, but par for the course for them). The truth is, he ran an ugly and divisive campaign in which he attempted to court birthers, won the endorsement of the lead birther, made birther jokes at his rallies, and called 47% of the country lazy moochers just because they didn't support him. Yeah he's better than what the current monstrosity of the GOP is, but make no mistake, he played a part in the rise of Trump, as did many of the GOP politicians and "conservative" media did.

Their conclusion, much to the dismay of the entire planet, was "um actually its clear we lost because we weren't extreme right enough!"

He reminds me of the rich dude in a suit who shows up at your workplace to announce that everyone's fired. As I understand it, that's what his old company actually did. Not a good look.

Yeah, they went all in on the Bircher wing.
