Breaking: Investigators are responding to reported school shooting in Marysvi[W:480]

Re: Breaking: Investigators are responding to reported school shooting in Marysvi...

It's not always possible for parents to be involved enough. Teens have a long history of doing stuff outside the watchful eye of their parents and generally have a life outside that of their immediate family. They're experimenting with all kinds of stuff that they don't want parental feedback on and unless you lock your kid in the basement there will be some stuff that you just never know about no matter how good a parent you are. Add in all the social media stuff we have today and the kids have a whole lot more opportunities to make bad decisions than we did before all this gadgetry became available.

Re: Breaking: Investigators are responding to reported school shooting in Marysvi...

every parent who reads these stories grimaces with the thought "thank god it wasnt my child"

that is natural....

but it almost seems like people want to put the blame somewhere......

of course we can blame the shooter.....he was the one that killed the kids

what about his parents? could they have done more?

would you know if your child was having these thoughts?

is it the world we are raising them in? the violence that surrounds them? the other stories of mass shootings that spur others?

i think we have always had people on the "edge".......

maybe we identified them better before, because parents werent so busy, and they interacted more back then

i dont have the answers....just lots of questions like a lot of you

but i know that it isnt going to stop......especially with the amount of media coverage every one of these gets.....

Re: Breaking: Investigators are responding to reported school shooting in Marysvi...

I know, but I know my kid's hearts very well, and we talk quite a bit about everything.

We are far from perfect parents, but we are involved in discussing with them what they think, feel, their opinions, their beliefs, and their fears.

We also incorporate discussions about incidents like this one, and use them to reinforce what is right and wrong.

They both know how much they are loved, and how important their lives and actions are to themselves, our family, and society.

Their biggest obstacle that I see is peer pressure from other kids.

Re: Breaking: Investigators are responding to reported school shooting in Marysville,

A very good post worth repeating.

Greeting, Lutherf. :2wave:

When I think back, I'm actually amazed that so many of us survived! Meeting places changed, but the kids from all the various high schools went swimming at night in a dangerous abandoned sand and gravel pit that was God knows how deep, but was reputed to have bulldozers in there somewhere. I'm certain my parents didn't know - I sure didn't tell them! I try not to think about what my kids might have been doing at the same age - I didn't ask, and they didn't volunteer. Maybe one day I'll hear things while we're drinking enough margaritas, but who knows? At least we weren't out destroying other people's property, though, like so many seem to find fun doing these days! We knew better than that......

Re: Breaking: Investigators are responding to reported school shooting in Marysvi...

I'm with you on that, Mrs. P, but there's a difference today. Back when we were doing that crap we were doing it face to face and the consequences of being an idiot were both tangible and immediate. Today the kids are doing stuff through social media and they can filter the immediate consequences to whatever they want. The level of verbal cruelty is also a lot higher because the risk of someone smacking you in the kisser for being a jerk just isn't there with electronic communication. I firmly believe that social media, especially for vulnerable teens, tends to magnify the emotional issues that all kids deal with.

Re: Breaking: Investigators are responding to reported school shooting in Marysville,

Thanks for the laugh J. But I'm not anti gun and don't oppose self defense. I object to the belief that the founding fathers would have been stagnant. They too would have changed and reconsidered. How they would have eventually fell on the issue is hard to say. Because even protection is different today than it was then.

Re: Breaking: Investigators are responding to reported school shooting in Marysville,

Yes. The world is different. Invasion isn't as much of a threat as someone breaking into my home or robbing me in the street. So my rights should reflect that...people deserve the right to defend themselves.

And I don't oppose you having a gun and for you to defend yourself. But how this is done and where the lines are might well be seen differently by the founding fathers than they saw it then.

Re: Breaking: Investigators are responding to reported school shooting in Marysville,

Not only defense of the country, but defense from the country. As the saying goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. They saw the government as a solution, and as a problem.

Well, your gun won't do that. You're out gunned and out manned. You better have a plan B.

Regardless, that is not the point.

I'm thinkin maybe your first point has merit
the rest are simply a misguided/slanted viewpoint
you have absolutely no idea if the child believed or not

Yep

The disconnect from God is something thats relatively new.

ummm
no ...its not

"the TERM "atheism" originated in the sixteenth century – based on Ancient Greek ἄθεος "godless, denying the gods
atheistic ideas, as well as their political influence, have an expansive history. Over the centuries, atheists have arrived at their point of view through a variety of avenues, including scientific, philosophical and ideological notions
Philosophical atheist thought began to appear in Europe and Asia in the sixth or fifth century BCE. Will Durant explains that certain pygmy tribes found in Africa were observed to have no identifiable cults or rites. There were no totems, no deities, and no spirits. Their dead were buried without special ceremonies or accompanying items and received no further attention. They even appeared to lack all simple superstitions,

Re: Breaking: Investigators are responding to reported school shooting in Marysville,

Atheist are just as dependant on faith as any God fearing individual.

They use " Science " as a justification but haven't through Science justified their beliefs.

That's because Science doesn't prove or disprove the existence of a creator.

If anything the Scientific study of the origins if our Universe point to the existence of a creator far more than it denies the existence of a creator.

Re: Breaking: Investigators are responding to reported school shooting in Marysville,

the anti gun clowns trying to pass a moronic intrusive "universal background check" will claim tis incident is why such a stupid law is needed (even though it has nothing to do with a kid committing first degree murder)

.
whats so intrusive about it?
for that fact whats so moronic about it?

Jonathan Kay: America’s firearms culture forged by paranoia, racism and civil rights unrest
.
This week, the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit upheld a 2011 Florida law that makes it illegal for doctors to ask parents if they keep a gun in their house — notwithstanding the fact that the presence of such a weapon is, according to one expert, “43 times more likely to be involved in the death of a member of the household than to be used in self-defence.”
.
Earlier this year, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal signed legislation known to critics as the “guns everywhere bill.” The law allows Georgia residents to carry guns into bars,
(cause guns and alchol go so well together)
... most government buildings and gun-friendly churches
.
On the same day, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed a bill that would ban any local government from enforcing ordinances that restrict the open carrying of firearms. “Kansans have long believed the right to bear arms is a constitutional right,” he explained.
.
Meanwhile, members of a group called “Open Carry Texas” are marching proudly through busy stores and parking lots armed with assault rifles, small children in tow.
(teach your children well)
...In one iconic photo, an overweight man with a massive gun slung over his shoulder stands in front of a rack of baby toys at Target, drinking from a bottle of water. According to Open Carry Texas founder CJ Grisham, such stunts will help show Americans that liberals’ collective fear of guns is “irrational.”
.
Well then colour me irrational. And colour all of Canada irrational, too — even the conservative parts.
There is a fine line between responsible gun-rights advocacy and America’s GOP-enabled Yosemite Sam gun-cult carnival — and I feel comfortable drawing that line around the diaper section of my local big-box store.

The statement was not about the shooter, but general observations.

Comprehension can be your friend.

As I noted, he doesn't believe the hate filled crap he spews at gun owners. IF he did, he'd be too scared to spew it

because you might pull your pistolaros?
at a simple perceived slight?
is this whats meant by defending home and family?
is this your reason for having said firearms?

If you really believe that, you're pretty dumb, since, you know...if you believed it...you'd get shot, according to your beliefs.

Just pointing out a flaw in your argument, not JOINING the argument.
