Brazil's Lula aims to bolster geopolitical ties with Africa
Lula is on diplomatic offensive, with Africa as his focus. He already visited Angola earlier, will visit Egypt and Ethiopia, and is a Guest of Honour on the African Union summit in Addis Ababa. Brazil do not come with the colonial bagage of the West (of course Brazil is a colonial power in the Amazon, but they do not have that bagage in Africa), after all Brazil was itself a colony of a European power until the early 1800s. Brazil also need to find new trading partners, and Africa is alluring indeed. Over the past few years Brazil's investment in Africa has in fact been in decline, and former president Jair Bolsonaro had no interest in deepening ties. Brazil as a G20 member has also promised to put Africa on the G20 agenda, which they can do since they hold the G20 Presidency this year. Especially the fight against hunger in the "Third World" (this term is becoming very outdated) is high on Brazil's agenda.
