So women who now have no choice and have to give birth are now having a hard time getting the maternity leave they legally can have. They aren't even getting the leave paid yet this boss seems to think that this woman doesn't need more than a week.

She gave 2 months notice.

Further conversations with this boss exposes the fact that he wasn't being honest with the worker and when the worker pointed it out, the boss backed down.

How many more women will now be forced to face either losing their job or giving birth?

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of less-competitive males that are all for this, making available more jobs that they previously had to compete with women for.

This'll be really helpful for single mothers too...more need for public assistance, more tax payer $$.

Most European countries allow women to have 6 or 9 months paid maternity leave by law.

1 week unpaid leave would be illegal in most countries in the world. But American workers have barely any rights in the workplace.

Men and women are equal they are not the same.

Your world view wants to disregard this fact.

Anecdotes are cool!

Federal law allows for up to 12 weeks unpaid leave.

Since I have frequently written that top sentence many times...your world view arrives at many very poor conclusions.

The differance is you want government to force business to make both equal where nature has not.

That is not my poor conclusion but rather your overt bias.

Laws requiring FMLA leave vary by business size etc. So there may be no requirement to accomodate maternity leave, like it or not. Running a small business is very difficult when you have a small staff and people go out for months on end. Honestly, when you employ people it is something you consider. Most of my employees are female (healthcare) we are cognizant about their age/family status when we make hire decisions. It is extremely difficult to accommodate employees going out for 2-3 months, often never coming back, etc.

Depending on your state that is incredibly illegal, pure discrimination and unethical even if it isn't.

The US is the only developed country paid maternity leave, which is ridiculous. In Canada the minimum is 40 weeks and can be shared between the parents.

I am not sure which aspect you are referring to. FMLA only applies to employers with more than 50 employees in a specific business. This is why most business owners in the 50-200 range will break up the companies employing labor to keep each company under that threshold. Well, one of many reasons.

As to the concern about hiring, you can't discriminate against hiring someone because of health status (pregnancy), but good luck with that. The reality is that it simply isn't practical in many cases. If I ran a business that was entirely comprised of a staff of 22-30 year old women it would be a disaster, 15-20% of them would be pregnant in a given year. You can't run a business like that, fair or not.

Discriminating in hiring based of family status or age is certainly illegal in many states.

You have provided no substance, only mischaracterized responses.

"Be best."

....errr...private company, they can do what they want. Right?

Rights aren't absolute, and freedom to do X doesn't mean that there won't be consequences. Right?

That's great, not here. I encourage you to run a business hiring exclusively women of child bearing age. It can't be done.

What 'substance' did you offer?

Only if the employer employs 50 or more employees.

FMLA includes
  • private sector employers who employ 50 or more employees for at least 20 workweeks in the current or preceding calendar year – including joint employers and successors of covered employers.
