Bond denied for SC state lawmaker indicted on 10 counts of distributing child sexual abuse material
South Carolina state lawmaker RJ May, who co-founded far-right House Freedom Caucus, was indicted on 10 counts of distributing child sexual abuse material.
COLUMBIA — Now-suspended state Rep. Robert John "RJ" May III will be held indefinitely inside the Lexington County jail after a federal magistrate denied him bond in the wake of a shocking filing of charges that centered on him allegedly sharing electronic files depicting child sexual abuse.
May, 38, was indicted by a federal grand jury this week on 10 counts of distributing child sexual abuse materials — the culmination of a more than yearlong probe in which authorities were tipped off by a national messaging app before moving in to seize his phone and computer.
