The PC crowd says it's better to give her 100% adult supervision.

Blind girl, seven, banned from using white stick at school as it is 'health and safety risk' - Telegraph

Lily-Grace-Hooper1_3502780b.webp

nov 17 2015 A blind girl has been banned from bringing her white walking stick to school because of "health and safety" reasons.
Lily-Grace Hooper, seven, suffered a stroke when she was just four days old, leaving her with virtually no sight.
But her school, Hambrook Primary School in Bristol, has told the youngster she can no longer use her cane because it could trip up teachers and other pupils.
A risk assessment completed on behalf of the school said the cane caused high risk to other people and that Lily-Grace should instead have "100 per cent" adult support at all times.

It seems bizarre to tell her not to use her mobility aid while she's mobilising around the school. If she can't see more than light or colour, I don't understand why they haven't already allocated classroom support either, since she can't possibly be taking in all of what's being taught.

Get her a guide dog and let's see if that disrupts classes any less than the tap stick?

What idiots.

What the school is really saying is....she belongs in a special school. It's sad. But I see their point. In a school of kids and teachers who are not blind, things most fast, kids run down hallways late for class, holding books, they leap up stairs. All of that lends itself to someone tripping over a cane reaching out ahead of the blind student.

I don't know the answer, if the parents want the girl to attend school with less challenged kids. But if they let boys use the girls bathrooms and locker rooms, then maybe they should bend over backwards for those with disabilities, too.

There's no reason why a school can't cope with a blind child, or their cane.

We have a semi-croppled girl here that uses a cane. high school. halls, stairs, etc. not one issue in three years. basically ALL kids, even the "tough guys" are really nice about it. they wait so she can pass, etc.

How is the P.C.?

I mean, it sounds kinda stupid on the surface but P.C.?

P.C. has no real meaning. It is basically a phantom boogie man that actually means, "I don't like this so I'll blame it on the non-existent PC boogie man." It's the last refuge of those who can't do debate of find a real reason for their beef.

In actuality it does have a meaning, there is a set definition.

po·lit·i·cal cor·rect·ness

noun

noun: political correctness; noun: political correctitude

the avoidance, often considered as taken to extremes, of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against.

If true, this is just disgusting. Another low set by the PC asshats of Europe. I'm surprised they didn't say it offended Muslims.

In the US, the Feds would come down on this school like a ton of bricks, saying they were violating her rights under the Americans With Disablities Act.

That would be struck down because it would upset Muslims (the whole "unclean" thing).

I agree to an extent but PC is also, in some circumstances, a very real attack method to put on the defensive those that you don't agree with.

 Holy ****... somebody is taking a story about a little blind girl and her cane and is actually trying to make it about Muslims?

I mean, how messed up is that?

Yeah... So does "cool". But it's meaning has been bent in different ways... as people have done with "PC".

PC is most invoked by conservatives objecting to being pulled up for their casual racism or insensitivity to others.

There is no PC here by the "definition" offered. Some jobsworth invoked health and safety law to support their stupid assessment, and the agency responsible for H&S said they were talking bollocks.

So too is using the blame of "being PC" to shut up people someone disagrees with, so one can get their point out and shut down any response to them.

Actually cool has several distinct and set meanings.

One of the things schools do is help prepare kids for adulthood. her life beyond school wont include special neighborhoods that cater to her lack of eyesight.

In my 53 years Ive never seen where a cane for the blind has ever caused disruption.

Agreed... I just use the time that I was called a racist for being white by two black women. That was their reasoning... I was white so that made me racist. I tried to calmly disagree and was shouted down by others in the class that felt I was not being PC being "whiteness studies" is apparently a valid topic.

It is invoked after being directly insulted. I was in a coffee shop and mentioned something was retarded and while that may be an immature comment it is not a rude one but i was quickly insulted and ridiculed by a couple of hippy guys. That is fine. They tried. They tried to take the moral high ground and I used logic and talked about intent. Political Correctness is very real.

Only because it's been around a while. PC is getting bastardized far more recently. If it keeps going the way it is perhaps Websters will get a hold of it too.

What a couple of rabid hypocrites they are.
