I often hear of a break within the black community over the history-filled term. Some believe that the term is one of hate and one that shouldn't be used. Others feel the usage of ****** shows ownership of the term and is perfectly acceptable to be used freely.

What do you all think?

(I'm posting this here as I figured this is the appropriate spot)

Edit:
If you didn't figure it out, the term is nig ger.

Nig ger is an insult. Nigga has to do with ebonics. You have to "earn" the right to call your black friends "my nigga" or get to a point where they are comfortable with you saying it. Example. If Caine called me his "nigga" live(as in to my face). I'd probably feel uncomfortable. If Jallman did it, I'd just brush it off. They're both white. The difference is that one I consider a friend and the other isn't. It all depends on who the person is and whether or not I feel comfortable with them using it. One black guy can't walk up to another completely strange black guy and say "my niga". It's more a level of comfort thing then anything. I personally have a bunch of white friends who say my nigga without there being an issue but there's also been incidents where we go to a club and they say it and 3-4 black guys turn around and I try to smooth the situation over. It usually works. One time it didn't. But it usually does. Dave Chappelle had a really funny skit about how if in a group of white guys there's a white dude, you don't worry about the black guys. You worry about the white dude. Why? Because you have to wonder what he did to get the respect of the black guys.

Ebonics is not a proper language. It's a bastardization of the English language, stemming from years and years of ignorance, laziness and bad parental upbringing...usually due to the same factors. It is a never-ending cycle. Ebonics is a "dumbing down" of people...I'm certainly glad that the brief "Ebonics Movement" died out years ago.

However, I do agree with Hatuey about word useage. Gay people, for the most part, feel the same about being called a "******" or a "queer". It is perfectly okay for one gay person to call another that, especially if they are among friends. But for a straight person to use the words is not acceptable, is viewed as derogatory...unless (once again) the straight person is among close gay friends.

You are incredibly off on this except for the part where you say it's the dumbing down of English. And even then for the most part you're off. AAVE or Ebonics isn't a new thing nor is it lazy parents. It has to do with language. The first Africans made the Wolof language into a sort of African/English dialect that carried a lot of influences from other African languages. They carried a lot of sentence structure etc over. Add in 300+ years of not too much education and you have present day Ebonics. It has nothing to do with parents being lazy. There's a good book on Ebonics called Beyond Ebonics. It explains a lot of misconceptions both whites and blacks have concerning Ebonics.

Ebonics is really the study of the rules applied to turn English into some uneducated sounding pseudo-language whose purpose is for the most part to insult and denigrate "Whitey." Here is what I learned in Ebonics 1 :

i) In any English word with a contraction, eliminate the apostrophe and any letters after it.
1) Is it alright if I rollerskate through the campus ?
English) Yes, it's alright
Ebonics) It OK
ii) In a word ending in "d," substitute "dt" or "oodt."
English) That's all very fine...
Ebonics) That all reeeal gooudt....
iii) In a word ending in "ore," eliminate everything after the first "o" and add an apostrophe.
English) I won't tell you again, please shut the door.
Ebonics) I ain tellin you no mo', shet de do' !!
iv) For suffixes with 2 identical consonants followed by "er," eliminate the "er."
English) That Negro was larger and was holding a pistol.
Ebonics) Mah ***** was bigga had his fingah on yo' trigga.
v) In general, most "er"s are dropped and replaced by "ah."
English) Tower of Power
Ebonics) Towah of Powah
vi) However, in the case of a plural, "ers" is replaced by "az."
English) Negroes
Ebonics) niggaz
Now, a brief poem :
They go my niggaz all up in da hooudt,
Niggaz be pimpin' just like dey shooudt,
Leroy drive his Caddy right into a dee-itch
'Cause his punk-*** homey is too much of a bee-itch
Sistah on the pipe she hit on da stem
Homeboy got his *** in jail ageein'
Got me a supakool layin' in da free-idge
Niggaz be flyin' high off'n da bree-idge
Sambo ****ed up, he high on dat sherm
Bustin up a cap hey cuz got de germ

So you get the general idea...

A type of slang mostly used by your typical "thuged-out" niggas

Artist: Big L
Album: The Big Picture
Song: Ebonics

Yo, pay attention
And listen real closely how I break this slang **** down

Check it, my weed smoke is my lye
A ki of coke is a pie
When I'm lifted, I'm high
With new clothes on, I'm fly
Cars is whips and sneakers is kicks
Money is chips, movies is flicks
Also, cribs is homes, jacks is pay phones
Cocaine is nose candy, cigarettes is bones
A radio is a box, a razor blade is a ox
Fat diamonds is rocks and jakes is cop
And if you got rubbed, you got stuck
You got shot, you got bucked
And if you got double-crossed, you got ****ed
Your bankroll is your poke, a choke hold is a yoke
A kite is a note, a con is a okey doke
And if you got punched that mean you got snuffed
To clean is to buff, a bull scare is a strong bluff
I know you like the way I'm freakin' it
I talk with slang and I'ma never stop speakin' it

Chorus: repeat (2X)

"Speak with criminal slang" -Nas
That's just the way that I talk, yo
"Vocabulary spills, I'm ill" -Nas

Yo, yo
A burglary is a jook, a woof's a crook
Mobb Deep already explained the meanin' of shook
If you caught a felony, you caught a F
If you got killed, you got left
If you got the dragon, you got bad breath
If you 730, that mean you crazy
Hit me on the hip means page me
Angel dust is sherm, if you got AIDS, you got the germ
If a chick gave you a disease, then you got burned
Max mean to relax, guns and pistols is gats
Condoms is hats, critters is cracks
The food you eat is your grub
A victim's a mark
A sweat box is a small club, your tick is your heart
Your apartment is your pad
Your old man is your dad
The studio is the lab and heated is mad
I know you like the way I'm freakin' it
I talk with slang and I'ma never stop speakin' it

Chorus (2X)

The iron horse is the train and champaign is bubbly
A deuce is a honey that's ugly
If your girl is fine, she's a dime
A suit is a fine, jewelry is shine
If you in love, that mean you blind
Genuine is real, a face card is a hundred dollar bill
A very hard, long stare is a grill
If you sneakin' to go see a girl, that mean you creepin'
Smilin' is cheesin', bleedin' is leakin'
Beggin is bummin, if you nuttin you comin
Takin' orders is sunnin', an ounce of coke is a onion
A hotel's a telly, a cell phone's a celly
Jealous is jelly, your food box is your belly
To guerrilla mean to use physical force
You took a L, you took a loss
To show off mean floss, uh
I know you like the way I'm freakin' it
I talk with slang and I'ma never stop speakin' it

Chorus (2X)

As for it being nigga, I'll give you that. Although this is not always the case in pop culture.

Remember, this question was about the black community and their usage. I don't care about whites and their usage of the word, whether it be for hate or to mimic black culture. For whites to use the word is just wrong in my opinion. And those black people who didn't do anything probably just realize how the system is. If they "started" trouble with white kids, there'd be no question who'd get locked up. In all honesty, you white kids most likely deserved to get your **** kicked in.

As for it being friends, I would disagree. I would argue that it's not so much the word but the tone that determines its intent and meaning. Flat tone means trouble while inflection would be a term of endearment.

But again, that doesn't answer my question.

I am particularly interested in the bold/blue line...
What, pray tell, is your intention when making that statement?

I'm not worried about ebonics. It's the natural progression of languages. Want to know where English came from? Norman soldiers trying to woo Saxon barmaids after the Norman Conquest. All the pidgen meshes together, and et viola! A language.

I think it's more frustration than anything. Young people are throwing around the term like it carries no weight. A white person has no business using that term, and this is even more so when black people are present. You deserve to get popped in the face if you throw that word around without discretion.

I 100% GUARANTEE that when he "smooths the situation over" it involves his white friends not using the term again within earshot of the black people.

Sticks and stone will break your bones
and certain words will get your bones broke too.

Why do African Americans get pissed when that term is used by Whitey?
It is just a word... like Retard.

It is such an explosive word, and stupidly so, that a white guy can generally expect hostility if he mentions it to a black guy even in order to find out why that person might personally find it offensive.

And you... you advocate violence over a "Word", for that is all that it is.

Blacks today were most likely not alive during the slave trade, and unless the term is being used AS a slur, then it is just a word and I feel that most of the hatred around this word would be gone if blacks would simply allow anybody to use it, with the caveat that it is not used as a slur.

Guarding it and holding on to anger is detrimental.

I already responded to this. It's not getting pissed because "whitey" is using it. Is who is using it and when. Doesn't matter if they're black OR white. You're from Cali. You should know this. If you wait long enough you can call any Mexican esse or vato without it becoming a problem.

You're exactly right!

I went to Long Beach Poly, a predominantly black school, which it basically broke down to who you knew, in what respect did you know them and how (or in what context) the term was used. I've said the n-word to many blacks many times and never had any problems with it. But these were people who were either my friends or basketball buddies I ran into on the courts at Vets Park all the time. I mean, if the conversation is about how funny Richard Pryor was and you were giving an example of his comedic greatness, you'd be using the n-word every other sentence if you were really trying to mimic the King.

I have a mixed household and we don't use the term here. I don't allow it because to do so would be setting a standard that one race can use a word but another isn't allowed. It's also generally used in a derogatory manner. I have caused more than one uncomfortable situation by calling out my kids black friends or even some of my own when they use the term nigga or nigger around me.

They are either universally acceptable for use by all or by none. At least when you are around me.

I believe it is universally acceptable depending on the context for which it is used.

Do you also ban the word "Howley"?

I've never even heard the word "howley." I would disagree with you completely on the universal acceptance of the word depending on context. Hatuey, and my son in law, would be very clear evidence of how your statement is off the mark by a few degrees. My kids were raised with predominantly black and hispanic friends, and my military time was spent predominantly in the company of black soldiers.

Some whites can use it once they are accepted within the crowd in which they intend to speak the word. For whatever reason I have always been quickly accepted by black people, not so much by hispanics. My last deployment after 9/11 I was in a unit of around forty people...four whites, four Puerto Ricans, the rest blacks. The blacks accepted me after about two days, the Puerto Ricans after about two weeks (and they were all friends with the blacks I was hanging out with), and the whites never really took to me because I was almost always hanging out with the blacks. Even then it took me about two weeks and us all being drunk for me to drop the word "nigga" in the crowd. The result was like in the movies...everybody just stops and looks at me like I'm crazy, then they bust out laughing...I was the "brotha from anotha motha" or "the white brotha." It's still that way today, but I just don't use that term anymore because I think it's destructive as long as only certain people "allow" others to use as they see fit. That, in my opinion, is bullshit. It's also reality.

Plus, I don't want my grand daughter raised talking like a street thug.

I am completely color blind.

I've a couple of black girlfriends and lost my virginity to a mexican/Indian.

You just re-iterated what I was saying. That it is the context for which it is used and the intent of why it was used, which makes up the "meaning" for which it was used. If it was meant to hurt, then you are right, it is inappropriate. The bottom line is, it is not "what" people say, it is "why" they say what they say, that is the basic meaning of the message being conveyed.

You lost your virginity to a Mexican chick? I salute you Billo. You make us Californians proud.

What I was getting at is that it is NOT universally acceptable because of instances where, and I have witnessed this, a white guy who was only joking and trying to fit in calling a black guy "nigga" and getting beaten over it or labeled a racist. The guy had no ill intent, he was just using a word that was being thrown around loosely in a crowd. There have been other instances like this involving non-blacks, which is really my point. Universally acceptable means, to me at least, it can be dropped by anybody casually at any time (so long as there is no ill intent). That is certainly not the case.

Your definition of universally acceptable may be different than mine.

If you didn't figure it out, the term is nig ger.

Since you asked.........

showing ownership of a word means little to nothing. If you feel comfortable saying N\gger and do so, it doesn't reflect that you own that word or have overcome the intent of it. IMO, it demonstrates a level of immaturity and a deliberate effort to push the envelope. It's plain and simple an unacceptable racist slur.

Ownership of a racist term and making a choice to use it does not demonstrate that you've removed it's intent. Words mean something. To claim that if I use a word enough times it will lose it's meaning is naive.

If I walked around calling people a pedophile or a cvnt or a bastard......in general terms (public forums, etc.)....people would take offense. Claiming that I owned those words and removed the offensive meaning (in my own mind) is a cop out.

Words MEAN something.

Nig ger is an insult. Nigga has to do with ebonics. You have to "earn" the right to call your black friends "my nigga" or get to a point where they are comfortable with you saying it.

I agree friends refer to each names they would not use in general/public situations......seems to happen with men more then with women. My husband and his friends get together and they sit around calling each other bastard.....among other things. Using derogatory terms, under some conditions, seems to provide a cement that bonds people together.
