Bill would prevent ICE from detaining or deporting U.S. citizens

I don’t see how that is the case.

The point of me putting this up is that he has been under threat of deportation since 2015.

Our current system makes it so people are effectively stateless even if they live basically their entire lives in the US.

The rationale makes makes no sense.
Read the cert, it opens all the eyes.

Did it take that citizen (whoever that may be) three days to provide proof?
He provided proof immediately.

Detained for three days without charges.

Even if they didn't have anything with them, I knew government agencies were slow but I didn't think THAT slow!
It’s because we don’t hold our law enforcement to a high standard that lets them get away with this shit.

Got a link, because that ought to be actionable? (if you are providing the full story)

I did.

He was three years old when he entered the US with his mother.

He was listed as having Jamaican Citizenship… now he was a baby… he didn’t make that decision.

He was born in Germany on a military base being the son of a US citizen and has lived in the US since he was three years old.

By all accounts he has made a lot of very poor decisions in his life and brought a lot of trouble unto himself.

Being made Stateless is a function of our system being idiotic.

Who had full custody, as a Jamaican citizen.

Correct. His mother did.

Also correct, and the mother of a Jamaican citizen. Prior to coming to the US, mother and father divorced, and mother was granted FULL custody.

Also true.
Being made Stateless is a function of our system being idiotic.
So then you understand that he was, specifically, NOT a US citizen or is there some other line of argumentation, not aligning with the law? He was not made Stateless, he has a 'State', it's the country of Jamaica.

Who had full custody, as a Jamaican citizen.
His mother was Kenyan. His father was a US citizen.

He didn’t make the decision to enter the US as a Jamaican citizen at the age of three.
Correct. His mother did.
So not his fault.

A man born from a US citizen and living in the US since he was three years old… has zero connections to Jamaica or to anywhere else being deported because “technically he is blah” just shows how cruel, illogical and inhumane the entire system is.

No child is at fault, but no child gets to turn 18 and say "I want to be a US citizen either" regardless of time in the US. The same holds true for the millions of illegal immigrants here today, some for decades (likely)

Your claim of him being stateless is incorrect so I ask again, what argument are you going to put forth in light of the law not being on the side of this person?

A very poorly considered action by Jayapal, and not her first.

Why is that? Trump publicly floated the idea of stripping Rosie O’Donnell, a natural-born U.S. citizen, of her citizenship because he views her as a “threat to humanity.” More likely he at the least has a strong personal dislike for her because she’s not shy in sharing her feelings about him. He said this even though he has no constitutional authority to do it.

So I can at least see why some Democrats would view a bill like this as a good idea. Using a procedural mechanism to force a vote and get Republicans to go on the record saying, “Yeah, what’s wrong with violating the 14th Amendment and stripping native-born Americans of their citizenship?” kind of brings the issue into sharper focus.

He is effectively stateless

He has lived in the US his entire life and had no connections to Jamaica.

And the point is that the law is stupid and pointless if this is the result of it.

So wait. Suddenly one US parent isn't enough?
He was born in Germany on a US base and they decided that that did not confer citizenship.

All these things that were not his fault compounded to get him deported to a country where he has no ties to when he brought trouble to himself and others.

He should be punished for the laws he broke and harm he caused… but deporting him is just stupid.

I don’t see how that is the case.
Thomas entered the United States with his mother when he was 3 years old, holding a green card and claiming Jamaican citizenship.

Neither Thomas’ mother, when he was a minor, or Thomas, after turning 18, made any effort to acquire U.S. citizenship.
The point of me putting this up is that he has been under threat of deportation since 2015.
Owing to Thomas’ criminal activities/convictions.
Our current system makes it so people are effectively stateless even if they live basically their entire lives in the US.
The numerous immigration regulations/laws can be confusing (at least for this layperson), and should be better clarified and simplified, IMO. Factors including birthdate, date first entering the U.S., parents legal status, etc., can make it difficult for folks seeking U.S. citizenship to chart their path.

That isn’t what bothers me the most about many of the horror stories of families being ripped apart by ICE that we read about on a near daily basis.

What bothers me most is that Traitor Trump’s administration has the discretion to not deport senior citizens that have lived here since childhood and children/young adults that haven’t committed any crimes, but chooses to do so because “law and order” isn’t the point. Cruelty is.

Rosie O’Donnell has nothing at all to do with Jayapal’s attention seeking, completely unnecessary, never gonna make it to a floor vote bill.

Honestly, I don’t think this is the stupidest thing a Democrat’s ever done. There is an important principle at stake here, and that’s the value of U.S. citizenship.

How does a bill that will not become law help?

Why do we need a bill to stop ICE from doing something they legally shouldn’t be doing in the first place
Maybe we just need a bunch of video of republicans saying there’s no need that we can throw in their faces when ICE starts going after Americans.

Know how to stop stupid bills like this being put forth as the waste of time/energy they are?
Allow ZERO publicizing (0 reporting) of anything that doesn't make it through committee.
Even if Congress implemented some such rule, no way that would stop the information from getting to the press.

Immigration enforcement detaining a citizen for three days without filing any charges is tyranny.

No one should put up with it.

Most states can hold a suspect for up to 72 hours without charges.
