It's a sad day when our billionaires have to cover for our government's stupidity.

I ****ing hate Microsoft's Windows....and am regularly annoyed by Word (nevermind the way Microsoft began). But, Bill Gates seems like a pretty good guy.

Why doesn't he and other billionaires make up for our inadequate defense spending?

Maybe China will give Microsoft a good deal in return.

Heck, why don't the top 10 US billionaires spend most of their fortune to "save" the American people?!? Surely a couple of billions left would still be enough for them and their families ...

Jeff Bezos: $114 billion
Bill Gates: $106 billion
Warren Buffett: $80.8 billion
Mark Zuckerberg: $69.6 billion
Larry Ellison: $65 billion
Larry Page: $55.5 billion
Sergey Brin: $53.5 billion
Michael Bloomberg: $53.4 billion
Steve Ballmer: $51.7 billion
Jim Walton: $51.6 billion

Gates has been making Trump look like the dumb punk he is all week.

Because its not inadequate

Really? Is the U.S. defense budget large enough to create a strong enough military for the U.S. to win handily the next major war

You know one is coming.

Well we spend more than the next ten countries combined.

Is that not enough?

Gates supporting WHO is one of the best reason I have seen so far for why not another US dollar should go to them.

The big problem with defense spending is that it doesn't go to our troops!

Maybe instead of asking billionaires to kick in some money why not ask the defense contractors not to fleece the taxpayers so huge.

Note the years. That's outdated. Now we're at something like 760 billion. Or probably 780.

How is spending more on defense than the next 10+ countries combined inadequate? Who are you afraid of invading?

Military Spending - Our World in Data

Utterly meaningless statistics. The U.S. defense spending at the current level is basically simply at "place holding" level. Not enough to strengthen the U.S. to fight (and win) the next major war. A war I believe is utterly inevitable.

But just winning a war is not enough. The American people expect our military to not only win but win impressively enough that we are able to minimize our casualties.

But just winning a war and minimizing our casualties is not enough. Americans want our military to not only win impressively enough that we are able to minimize our casualties but even more impressively enough to minimize ENEMY casualties as well.

Finally the U.S. doesn't fight wars on its own territory. Our military for the most part is not built to defend the U.S. (if you think that is what it should do then that is a separate policy question you should address elsewhere). Our military is composed of EXPEDITIONARY forces. That is for our military to get into battle they have to take ships or planes to get there. Expeditionary forces cost man for man at least 5-7 times as much as the non expeditionary forces our likeliest enemies like China, Russia, and Iran deploy.

Plus, the U.S. military is composed of VOLUNTEER forces while nations like China use draftees. So our military has to compete with the civilian economy for manpower which means the U.S. spends far, far, far more lavishly on pay and benefits compared to nations like China, Russia, and Iran.

Finally, spends much more lavishly on its soldiers for various things from quality of life measures to medical treatment of wounded.

All in all there are a whole host of reasons the U.S. has to spend so much on its military.

I've figured it before and the U.S. defense budget should probably be about 1 trillion dollars a year with a minimum of 5% (50 billion) increases annually, indefinitely.

That is an insane amount of money!!!!

Ridiculous

So if ten times more is not enough....what is? 20 times?

You didn't read my post. Read it and refer to specific points and perhaps I'll reply to you. And considering the U.S. doesn't have any real idea what the Chinese and Russians spend on their military your point is irrelevant anyway.

read:No, we are not spending “as much on our military as all other countries combined” – and other facts about the defense budget you should know – Lawfire

We need to cut the military budget in half, mothball half our carriers and shift the mission to defend our shores.

We are not the world's policeman

We are not the world's policeman.

Would you agree the U.S. needs enough aircraft carriers to "defend out shores" then?

And if the U.S. is not the "worlds policeman"...then who is?

In America we already spend way too much on a bloated, inefficient, robber baron controlled national defense. Which country are you from?

Sounds like the world's problem to me.

Citation needed from an unbiased source regarding this claim.

And if they won't do it? Are you okay with a chaotic and lawless international environment?

The "international environment" isn't going to magically become "chaotic and lawless" just because the United States stops bombing Yemen.
