Current average - 55% approval, 42% disapproval. Rasmussen, a right-leaning, has him with in the low 50% range on the plus side, and low 40% on the negative side.
Why is Biden so popular? My view is that people like how he's handling the covid19 crisis and approval of his infrastructure reform legislation.
Perhaps he's helped by the fact, GOP can no longer see reality and will "cancel" anybody that doesn't bow down to the incredibly unpopular ex-president. See for example Liz Cheney being the victim of GOP cancel culture.

Here's the lean ratio of the different polls RCP included. a D 1,6 means that polls leans Democratic by 1.6 points, a R 1.1 means that poll leans Republican 1.1 points.
Rasmussen R 1.5
ReutersIpsos D 1.6
Harvard D 0.1
The Hill/Harris X R 1.1
Economist/yougov D 0.7
politico/morning consult D 2.9
Daily Kos/Civqs D 2.9
NPR/PBS/Marist D 0.1

So in this latest from RCP, there are six polls which lean Democratic vs. 3 polls which lean Republican. I like how RCP averages the polls, Biden 54.7% is very good.

Looking these up, a couple surprised me, most I expected. Reuters/Ipsos leaning that much democratic along with The Hill/Harris leaning Republican were complete surprises. I expected the oppsite. Daily Kos, politico heavily leaning Democratic, I expected that along with Rasmussen heavily Republican tilt.
Why is Biden so popular, I'd take a SWAG that he's still in the honeymoon phase of his presidency, benefiting from not being Trump. At least among independent who like Biden as a person. They never liked Trump as a person. Besides, Biden acts like an adult and behaves presidential, something we haven't had for four years. Will this continue? I doubt it, Biden and the democratic controlled congress will hit some speed bumps, but so far, so good.
I'll add this, it sure is nice not to turn on the TV hearing the previous president calling others a bunch of names and throwing some temper tantrums to go along with his name calling. No 3rd grad schoolyard bullying from Biden. Right now, that's enough to make me happy with Biden being president and giving him my approval. But sooner or later, folks will begin looking at what Biden and the democratic congress are doing or not doing, whether they're going too far or not far enough. Not being Trump, acting presidential is enough right now. But no one knows what the future will hold.
