What you most probably describe as loyalty is the cat's "affection", the way they walk near your leg and rub their body with it.
They only do it for the heat.
Interesting. I always thought they did it to mark ownership of their people. Regardless, I love cats. They are independent and offish, but in my experience, they definitely form close ties with their humans.
My current cat just adores my daughter and will come running if he hears her voice. He has even tried to defend her from a dog.
They certainly do. For example, my wife had a cat that would not have kittens anywhere except when my wife's mom was around. If she changed rooms, the cat would too.

We had a manx cat that I found as a kitten lying on the highway in the rain. I thought he was dead, but my boys looked back and saw he was moving, so I took him home (this is how we end up with all our cats- they are abandoned by other people as a rule). Anyway, he was a ferocious hunter, and remained so after we had him neutered, and he kept all male strays away until he died a couple of years ago at age 18. He had attitude his entire life, and he definitely regarded us as his to defend.I miss him like a brother, and I mourned him when he died.
Cats, followed by fish. Cats are the perfect pet in that they are highly trainable, extremely loyal, and independent. A well taken care of aquarium is beautiful, full of life, and the sound is soothing. Some day when I have more money, I so want a mini-reef aquarium, nothing is more spectacular looking.
Eve have a cat leave you a mouse on your pillow? Kinda gross, but certainly a show of loyalty. Despite being solo hunters, cats are a very social species.
I boycott this poll for lacking the option "Monkey".
Having a monkey pet is right on the top of my to do list in this life.
They're just so ****ing awesome.
Except for a pig, I've had all of those at some point in my life. Gerbils are the most low maintenance, and pretty clever. It's ashame they got paired with hamsters in this poll. Hamsters are miserly, lazy little creatures.
Gerbils are quite popular in san francisco.
