Best materials for home made masks

Pretty sad that this is what has become of the superpower that brought peace to WW-II, and put a man on the moon.

We have one company in this entire company that can make the nasal swabs, the rest are located overseas. Now there's a rush to have multiple companies here in the US to begin producing these. But there's still a problem obtaining the material inside the glass collection tube and the tubes themselves. The same goes for PPE like gloves, gowns, masks, ventilators, tubing for the vents, etc.

The U.S. can only blame ourselves for this. We gave all our industry away and we did it willingly. We sold it all off to Taiwan, the Philippines or China to make because they have cheap and even slave labor. It's all been about corporate profits. Corporations could have made all the things we send overseas right here in the US but then they would be hampered by federal taxes and higher wages to pay which meant less money in their pockets. We created this mess and this moment has been coming for a long time. It's here now.

A short article on face masks and yet they have to mention Trump no less than five times.

They 'had' to? Oh I see, so they lied when Trump said people don't need masks and that a scarf is good enough? Let me ask, was that a good thing or a bad thing for Trump to tell millions of Americans? Wait, I have the answer right here -- it was a bad thing, a very dangerous thing. And yes, Trump deserves all the credit for that. Was it a good thing or a bad thing for experts to point out that a scarf gives little to no protection against passing or getting this virus? Wait, I have the answer. It was a very good thing to warn people that what Trump told them would be dangerous for their health, that it had no medical or scientific basis.

Why the **** do you post such moronic lies?

Ctrl-F for "Trump" and I count 5 instances:

In early April, when Americans began to embrace the idea of wearing face masks to flatten the curve of the coronavirus, President Donald Trump suggested it wouldn’t hurt the public to wear masks, but that scarves could be a perfectly suitable substitute.

“It doesn’t have to be a mask. It can be a scarf,” Trump said. “What I do see people doing here is using scarves. And I think in a certain way, depending on the fabric, I think in a certain way, a scarf is better, it’s actually better.”

...

Among the key takeaways: Trump’s scarves tested among the least effective materials, while denim, canvas and paper towels were among the best.

...

Trump’s suggestion of using scarves as face masks may not be the best choice,” Robertson said.

...

Perhaps Trump should check out our data and update the general public.

Would that be the world war II where women spent a lot of their free time sewing blankets and socks for troops?

Hmm... wouldn't using US made medical care supplies and equipment just increase (the already inflated?) US medical care costs?

What's the connection between government power and the supply of face masks?

Then you should support reducing federal taxes and eliminating labor cartels unions which jack up wages way above their true market rate.

I have supported NOT giving rich corporations and billionaires a huge tax break that never expires which caused the national debt to skyrocket. That's what I support. Federal taxes are necessary, in case you never knew that.

There is a reason for mentioning him:

Why so angry? Who cares whether it was five times or three, which is what I carelessly counted?

A 3M Hepa N95 mask blocks 97.5% of virus, a Hepa vacuum cleaner bag blocks 99.9% of virus.

Well, a Hepa vaccum cleaner might block this much but it is not wrapped around a face. If they just test the material, they may find that, but it is hard to achieve a good seal around all the bone and flesh structures of a face so the N95 mask is not perfect.

Much the opposite, I find that it is proof of good American spirit to jump into the production of home made masks if we don't have industrial-made ones, which is not the hugest of shames when you consider that the entire world is seeing shortages. Let's not be too hard on ourselves. The pandemic caught the entire world pants down, it's not just an American phenomenon.

Yea, he made a mistake. So what? He assumed a scarf would work, and it turns out it won't. BFD.

That is a good point. In the past, I have lamented that we gave away our means of production. Our industry now produces mega devices like MRI machines and jet engines but pretty much everything we need to daily run our lives and our country is Made in China or some other country.

Actually, it kinda is in an article about the best materials for face masks.

I am not a Donald Trump fan but I don't like to blame him for things that are not his fault. I remember reading, BEFORE Trump mentioned it, that in the absence of a facemask, at least a scarf could be useful. This study testing scarves wasn't available yet. It's not really Trump's responsibility to go test materials himself. He mentioned what seemed to be sound advice at the time. At the very least, having a scarf around one's face will prevent people from touching their nose and mouth with fingers that got infected by touching a door knob or a gasoline pump or a grocery store checkout screen.

So now there is a study showing that scarves aren't a good idea. That's new info. This situation is evolving so info does change as new studies become available.

It would be good, though, if Trump could correct the previous advice. It would suffice to say, "by the way, dear Americans, I previously mentioned that scarves would be fine; it turns out that new information shows that they don't protect enough, so, look for these other materials instead" and would list the best materials and direct people to a website with instructions on how to make the home made masks using those materials.

Trump rarely acknowledges a mistake, though, even when it's not his mistake and he was just the conduit.
