Exactly. If the sun suddenly went supernova (which it cannot), we wouldn't know until the light and blast hits us. But a noteworthy star to observe is Betelgeuse. When that star goes supernova, it will make quite the spectacle to observe. But by then, it will have happened 5-6 centuries ago or so.All you need to do is look at the sun. You’re looking back a little over 8 minutes in time.
