Would you have thought that troops we had been training for 20 years would throw down their gun and run?

If they aren't willing to fight for their country then we have just thrown away 20 years of lives and treasure. Of course every time we go in the Nation building business it ends like this.

Maybe lots of people will say now: I saw it coming all along ....

Who is honest enough to say: "I am surprised ...."
Were you surprised or did you see this coming all along?

Are you surprised about the early fall of Kabul?
Hell no. It was obvious that we propped up a paper tiger that had no will to hold their country. Hell, any viewing of a decent documentary back in 2004 spelled that out.

The stress on my question is on EARLY - not just on the fall itself.
I was sure that Kabul would fall some day - but not quite so early.

Voted "not surprised at all."

For the same reason I have been saying in just about all the other threads on this subject, no one going back generations really bothered to learn much about the people over there. Sure, we could identify who we called a good guy and perhaps later relabeled to bad guy. Sure, we could support this government or that one. Sure, we could categorize who was under whatever banner over there.

But on a core ideological basis, no administration really learned much about them.

Almost 20 years, thousands of lives lost, even more changed forever, and trillions out of the coffers... complete and utter failure in a manner of days.

Every President going back many decades is deserving of blame and criticism, some more than others but not a one of them nor anyone that worked for them really put much thought into who they were dealing with.

Of course it was all going to collapse quickly, we ignored the underline ideology now sitting in the Presidential Palace over there.

That the Taliban took back the country is no surprise, that it happened in a matter of days was not on my radar. Like you, I had no faith in the Afghan army to hold the country, but I expected it would take a couple months for them to give up.

The BBC doc I saw back in the early Y2k's laid it out nicely. These Afghan leaders were simply telling us what we wanted to hear. They had no loyalty to anyone but themselves. So, seeing that their "army" laid down arms to join the Taliban--which is basically what happened last week--is no surprise at all. None.

Hell, I am sure I would have done the same thing.

If other than American christian white males write American history going forward, this would go down as another in a long line of failure of imagination resulting from entrenched misogyny overwhelmingly driven by "the christian values" dominant white males who blocked women from voting until 100 years ago and who believe to this day they have an inherent right to continue to dominate and control women, even to the extent of asserting a right to punish them for decisions women make about their own bodies and the future course of their lives!

Imagine if Obama or his wife, Michelle had pointed out that those in Afghanistan with the most to lose should be offered an opportunity to attempt to determine their own fate and the fate of their daughters?

"Alongside its longstanding security challenges, the state of Israel has also been grappling in recent years with an intense controversy over the service of women in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The dispute recently came to a boiling point with the amendment of the “Joint Service Order,” which sets out guidelines for women’s military service alongside Orthodox men who observe, inter alia, religious restrictions on interacting with their female fellow-soldiers.

The IDF is one of the only armies in the Western world in which women are drafted to military service by law. Women have served in the Israeli army ever since its establishment in 1948. At first they served mainly in administrative jobs or as instructors in a variety of fields, but they gradually moved into operational positions due to both a shortage in combat soldiers and demands of Israeli feminist groups. According to Haaretz, the number of female combatants has more than doubled in recent years. In 2012, 3 percent of women in the IDF served in combat positions. Four years later, in 2016, the percentage more than doubled to 7 percent—and it will likely continue to rise.
A major milestone came in 199

True. Here is a sad, in more ways than one, picture ( ? where are the women?)

I'd say "not surprised at all", the one thing that was VERY surprising was the speed with which it happened.

The so called "afghan forces" basically didnt even put up a token resistance, LMAO, I dont think they ever planned to. They knew the US would eventually leave and it would be back to their normal way of living.

This is just my opinion based on observations from afar. maybe they did put up a stiff resistance IDK, but it sure doesnt seem like it. It seems like they laid down their arms or probably joined the Taliban themselves. I dont blame them, I'm not really disparaging the Afghanis.

The end result was inevitable, so I'm not surprised by that. I am a little surprised that the Afghan government put up absolutely no resistance whatsoever and collapsed in a matter of days. But that just goes to show what a total failure the past 20 years of occupation have been.

It is an extremely depraved society, IMO, that sends its women off to war.
Thats just me.

Are you surprised about the early fall of Kabul?

Given what we know now about the lack of planning, no. The thousands of Marines planned to protect the evac were not in country to prevent the trouble. RUFKM?

It was obvious that the country was going to end up like this pretty quick.

I spoke to one returning soldier home from Afghanistan who was charged with some hands-on training some Afghans.

He said that left to their own devices, they would revert to "playing grab-ass" rather than behaving like real soldiers.

This was about 4 to 6 years ago. I don't remember exactly the place or time we had the conversation.

His on the scene assessment was that the folks we were training in their army were unserious and would turn tail at the first sign of trouble.

He was right. This is not unique to those that the US trains. Soldiers trained by "Cuban Regulars" in the past in Central and South America were also pretty much useless.

Our Keystone Cop spies indicated they were ready. Our Keystone Cop spies were wrong. AGAIN.

Unless you were there and knew those people, you wouldn't have known.

We’re not surprised trump screwed up both Afghanistan and Covid during February 2020.
