I'm starting this poll because I've seen some here make the argument that if it's ok for black people to express pride in their race and not be deemed racist, then whites should be able to as well. Ok, on the surface, that seems reasonable, but digging into it a littler further I started thinking about taking pride in whatever race you happen to be and it seems kinda odd. Does it mean you deserve some of the credit if someone has done something good, if you're of the same race? Does it really make sense to take pride in a physical trait you had zero control over? How is being of any race an accomplishment in itself?

Anyway, working on the poll. Oh, and I thought about not making the votes public, but I figured someone who is proud of their race wouldn't be shy in answering an unapologetic "yes".

Pride in my race? No. That's a matter of genetics. Pride in the heritage and culture of my family and my community? Yes. That was forged by actions of others and maintained and nurtured by me and my generation and will be kept alive by future generations.

Race? Insignificant other than maybe medical predisposition. Culture? Heritage? Both of these can be a matter of pride and used as a guiding force, or shunned due to generational failures and apoplectic socialization.

I don't like racial labels, or hyphenization of ourselves, or anything else that separates us intentionally and irreparably.

My answer is a combination of the two above. I am "proud," or, at the very least, rather fond, of my race. However, that is primarily because it is a part of my heritage, and therefore my identity.

Is that feeling rational? I don't know. One could easily make the argument that no form of collective identity or group association is necessarily rational. One can hardly deny their social utility, however.

All I know is that claiming that it is right, proper, and noble for someone of one race to take "pride" in their heritage and ethnicity, while claiming that someone of another race doing the same thing is evil and "bigoted," is simply idiotic. If it's acceptable for one group, it should be acceptable for all groups.

Anyone who claims otherwise has a certain agenda underlying their views which you need to be wary of.

I can't say that I am. I don't think there's much of a connection between white people. I don't really feel like I have anything in common with some random person from Naples for instance. But I do take pride in some things I had no control over I suppose, like being from St. Louis. Or at the very least I derive some pleasure from seeing hometown kids like Josh Harrellson and Bradley Beal make the NBA or Jon Hamm winning awards as an actor. It feels like there is some sort of connection just from having grown up in the same place and having to deal with the same things. If black people feel connected to each other due to their skin color because they believe that they all or they mostly have to deal with the same struggles and issues, it would make sense to take some sort of pride in their race and share in their accomplishments. Probably even more so because of the belief that together they're overcoming some past discrimination. I don't feel that way about white people, there don't seem to be any commonalities that are shared by virtue of being white, but if some do then it would probably make sense to take some pride their too.

Race is too nebulous. I'd feel more closely linked to someone of the same culture but different race than the other way around.

I'm a proud Honky, and I can't wait until the day that we have our own "white oriented " cable channel. Hopefully it will be named White Entertainment Television.. better known as the WET channel, and only show reruns of the Victory Garden, Leave it to Beaver and the Brady Bunch.

I gave that thought at one point long ago and somehow decided that pride was a weird thing to associate with one's race and doing so a little sad.

Being proud of a race automatically makes one a racist IMO, because he believes that there is a connection between belonging to that race and sharing the qualities of someone(or a group of people) who belonged to that race who were credited for doing something positive and remarkable. "I'm proud of being a <enter_race> because <enter_name> was/were <enter_race> and was/were credited for this and that".

Cultural/national heritage is a whole other thing. There is nothing wrong IMO with asserting that belonging to a certain nation or growing with a certain culture - which means with a certain set of values, lifestyle, ideology, etc. - may lead to more positive results as long as one doesn't believe that it automatically means he is superior to others, since there is an endless variety of personalities in every nation and culture.

In the US, it's more culture than race. They're using race as the identifier for African-American culture. Black history month doesn't exactly delve into the Mfecane or ruins of Great Zimbabwe, does it?

My race isn't something I think about much, if at all, during an average day. It's just not all that important.

I'm glad to be an American...and, probably glad I am white and male. But pride? I'm not sure that comes into play for me.

My race isn't a big part of my identity, so I guess my answer is "no opinion".

I think American blacks are generally "proud of their race" because of overcoming the whole slavery and civil rights thing, and what is considered "earning their place at the table." However, while I think black folks have a right to be "proud" of people like Dr. King, GW Carver, even Malcolm X, using them as a crutch to promote their pet causes is a bit unseemly.

There was a user here (since banned; I won't use his name in case that's a violation, although I think we all know who he is) who used to piggyback off of white people's accomplishments all the time. "WE built this country." That kinda crap. Well, that guy built nothing. The railroads were pretty much up and running by the time he was born; he didn't serve in any sort of capacity, he was just a racist dickbucket who wanted to claim accomplishments of others as his own because they happened to be born with the same melanin content. People who do that are idiots.

And as far as white people go ... white people really haven't had to dig out of any sort of hole to claim "their seat at the table."

This is basically my take, in an nutshell. I hit the genetic powerball by being born white, male, not poor and with enough intelligence to get a degree and a decent job. I'm proud of what I'VE done, but I've never once felt the inclination to be proud of my race. I don't give two shiny poops about my race. That said, I'm also not of a race that has ever seen a day of adversity in this country. A couple of my ethnicities have (Irish, Native American), but not my race.

I can dig this. I definitely have pride in my ethnic heritage. I love being Irish. I love being Scottish. I love being German (except for, yanno, THAT). I have probably more NA blood in me than Elizabeth Warren ... I like that too. I'm part English, French, Dutch, Swedish ... I take the time to find out where I come from, what my background is, and I'm proud of that. But being white? Hell, that ain't hard.

That's true. There is a certain camaraderie between the brothers that white people really don't have. "Oh, you're Portuguese? That's fantastic. I don't care."

BET isn't "dedicated" to black people anymore, which you'd know if you've watched it lately.

The reason BET came into existence was because in 1983, cable TV was all right if it was all white. It amuses me, with how long it's been, that people still get their nuts in a twist over it.

I bet you wonder why there's no "white history month" either.
