I was going to make this anonymous, but I don't really know how. Sometimes people pretend they're happy if their name is associated with a response.

 
2022 for the world was one of the worst years since World War ll and for myself, so no.

But I still sort-of remain optimistic for 2023 ...

I think personal life should not be conflated with the overall state of the world, otherwise no one would ever be happy. More than that, no one would ever be in a state to actually solve things that need to be solved. Although I respect the progressive sentiment of having empathy beyond your immediate existence.
 
This was the worst year in my 85 years.

My beloved brother may have died because a paid caregiver was probably too incompetent to administer only one or two drops and instead may have overdosed him.

I hold myself responsible for letting that "caregiver" get near my brother!

Good to hear. I live a simple life myself. I have a job that allows for almost unlimited free time and artistic expression. I'm brainstorming ways of helping other people achieve the same satisfaction with their jobs within my local community, rather than just try to eek by on the edge of this broken system. There's so much untapped potential out there. People are often working just to barely keep out of extreme poverty. Resources are kept just out of reach for those who need them. I've seen this cycle repeat itself so often.
 
2022 has been a excellent year for me financially & family wise.

Still working the part time job with a marine construction company, and I stumbled into a couple lucrative commercial property heavy iron/metal trash out deals that made my entire year inside of 8 weeks.

Still need to unload one last property that I used for storage when I was still going full tilt with my business, but I'm waiting on the city's zoning decision due in February.

As far as Politics and world events go? Mehhhh! Could care less what the dipshits in Washington are up to for the most part.

2023 will be dedicated to golf!

Not at all a progressive sentiment. Many conservatives share this sentiment and many who call themselves progessive do not.
 
Doesn't that depend on how you define happiness? We have our faith, we have what we need and enough to help those around us. No need to moan and groan about what we have no control over.

Honestly, I would like more free time, but...I suspect all I'd do with it is play video games and drink beer.

With respect, most conservatives I've encountered don't give a SHIT about people outside their immediate circle, or do so in the most Bible-thumping way (i.e. it's wrong for people to live a certain way because of their personal beliefs). A common theme of right-wing ideology is selfishness -- exemplified in libertarian economic philosophy. Hence the worship of Ayn Rand, one of the most selfish people to ever have existed.

It takes time to develop a hobby or a passion, so we do what provides to best bang for the buck (games, TV, beer). Not that there's anything wrong with that. The only reason I don't play games is because I've been involved in making them (after which they've become less immersive for me).

Anyway, free time in American culture is considered a luxury, when it should be the majority of our time. Americans are by far the most overworked, most psychologically squeezed people in a non-authoritarian nation. Most people spend their free time preparing for the next work day / week.

Yep.

I used to race cars, but then kids happened, and the expense of it got to be too much. One set of tires was setting me back 2 grand, and I could burn through a set in 3-4 weeks during the season. Became unjustifiable. And then there's the time. Ran out of that, too. As I climbed the work ladder, I have increasingly traded one problem for another...not enough money, and too much time to think about it...and now, I'm good, money wise, with no time to spend it.

And yes, a good chunk of my free time is spent gearing up for the next day of work.
 
Not my happiest year.

I've been digital nomading and snowbirding for several years now. This year I lived in Austin, Cambridge, and Miami. It's just too much moving around. I feel constantly exhausted, and it's very lonely and isolating. It's hard to settle into a healthy routine if I'm going to be moving every few months. I think I'm going to call it quits on the nomadic life, or at least do it less often. It used to make me happy, but now it's a source of stress.

On the positive side, I started a new job in machine learning, and made progress on my second Masters degree.
 
I'm basically happy, and that is a WHOLE lot. I thank the Universe usually every morning and every night, sometimes more than that. Its been rough and rocky travelin' for most of my life, mainly of my own doing of course, but the past decade/15 years or so been pretty happy and stable for the most part.
I am still unfulfilled in some ways...so there are always things to work on and improve on. But you have to be a "glass is half full" guy.
 
I learned long ago that for the most part happiness is a choice you make. I’m not talking about every moment of every day-just the balance of one’s life. That choice is made with your internal dialogue-what you think to yourself, what you tell yourself about the external events in your life, most of which are beyond your control.
I choose happiness.
 
I had again a absolutely, superbly, outragesly fantastic year.
Sadly as every year, I hope it gets better, hahahahaha.
2023 I might be able to retard abd start a completely new adventure, If that happens, I am in for a wild time.

We all post here about politics but at the end of the day what goes on in Washington or Sacramento affects me very little. I go on with my life coping with the choices I have available to me.
 


In my world there is an inextricable connection between the paradox of humans who needed to derive their happiness from the pain they cause others and then in some cases the happiness then experienced by those derived directly from overcoming that pain.

So if someone asks me if I am happy my answer usually is, that depends on the gentile I am with.
