Abortion, more so than any other issue I can think of in American politics is so partisan, so pig-headed, so extreme to the opposite sides of the spectrum, so full of hyperbole and emotion on both sides, that I think it's almost literally pointless to discuss. Every single thread in this forum, without question usually degenerates into the same line of debate, regardless of the OP.

Why do we frustrate ourselves with this topic so frequently?

One side wants to keep their freedom and the other side wants to take it away.

We can say that about most political issues. The fact is you can present an assortment of data proving your point and the other side will not budge an inch.

My goal is not to help educate those that are entrenched in their own bias but help those on the fence looking to make the right decisions. I am a Sunday School Teacher. I feel I have gotten the good message across. If my message can help one young girl or couple from making a haste life altering decision, it's all worth the fight and effort.

This it's the culture of modernity and privacy vs the cult of the invisible man in the sky

Well it depends on what is trying to accomplish to determine if its meaningless. Id say thats very subjective for each poster.

Also I personally never get frustrated with it because my only accomplishment is to have a real conversation and hear the honest views of others. Luckily I have done the many times in real life and a few here but unfortunately extremists post more in the local abortion threads that normal posters. So I spend a lot of time just pointing out false hoods.

You are right though many times the threads do turn out the same because the extremist hijack them.

I have absolutely LOVED the good talks I had with those of different view points though who were honest and normal, they were some of the most fun.

Faith and religion have a very important part of our society. It permeates everywhere. Look at after 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, or the San Bernardino shooting. We as a nation prayed. Bush joined in prayer, Obama joined in prayer, we as a nation bonded/healed through our faith, religion, and moral code.

Now after these horrific events, do you know who we didn't turn too? The atheists who would have said "oh well, we as humans are going to die anyway, our bodies will decomposes."

Any strong nation needs to be have a foundation of strong ethics, morals and principles. Without it, we would cease to be a nation and everyone basic rights would be stripped.

because there is always a chance that someone may modify their opinion

My main issue with the abortion debate is the amount of hyperbole used by both sides, where they turn the oppositions positions into extremes. Such as "They want to enter my body and take away all my rights!" or "People who have abortions are murderers!" Members of the extreme left and right of this issue on both sides are guilty of it to varying degrees and it takes away from the honest, legitimate debate one can have about the issue.

I'm sick of extreme partisan hyperbole in politics in general, but abortion is the one issue I see it used to an extreme level to where the emotional side of the debate is heightened.

Faith didn't do a lot of good for the people in the WTC or their families or their friends. The rest of your post is pablum.

This is true, but I find the opposite happens when you paint the opposition in such extreme ways. You just anger people and the discussion devolves, as happens on pretty much 99% of the threads here.

while that is certainly how it could and frequently does appear, one never knows if another walks away adamant that they are right and yet reflects upon the topic

I know what you are saying...I hate personal attacks too, not that I don't engage in it too sometimes when emotion gets the best of me, but the whole reason I am here is to think...granted a personal attack doesn't make anyone think because it is worthless, but we just have to wind our way around those comments, dismiss them and know the person who made the attack lost the argument right there

Well I agree, the extremism is what usually pollutes the conversation. We have one self identified pro-lifer here that many other pro-lifers blasted for their dishonesty, attacking and vile posts. It happens and it happens on both sides you are right. But the trick is to just think rational and objectively. That particular poster in no way speaks for the group, thats a common mistake people make. Not saying you make just saying its a subset of the problem.

Heck there are even people here that just automatically assume they know your stances simply based on what you claim choice/life and that too is silly. Theres also at least 3 lifers here that tell other lifers they arent "real lifers" LMAO how pompous and silly. Dont know if that has happened on the other side (im sure it has somewhere) but its extremism like that which is totally counter productive.

I also agree with the extremism in politics, its bad right now, some of the worst its ever been that Im aware. But what I think is funny IMO I dont think thats the real feeling or majority feeling. I think the extremists are just so loud right now they are skewing everything at least on the surface. Extremism is getting the most attention even though more people arent extreme.

Do you think that morals and ethics only come from Christianity?

Absolutely not, but we are a Christian nation. It would be really hard to dispute otherwise.

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The words "under God" were added to the pledge and currency by religious zealots in the late fifties. It's not part of American lore.

I'm an Atheist with my own set of morals and ethics no God required.

Because I am right and they are wrong...

One side wants to keep their freedom and the other side wants to take it away.

One side wants to be able to kill their children and the other wants to protect humans from being slaughtered...

...and it did a lot of good too, huh... all that praying? Stopped God's next slaughter of innocent humans, did it?

Now after these horrific events, do you know who we didn't turn too? The atheists who would have said "oh well, we as humans are going to die anyway, our bodies will decomposes."

You mean the atheists that thought these events were horrible and wished that they would never happen again, right? Because if you are painting atheists as non caring you have a lot of growing up to do... a

Bucky didn't mention or refer to Christianity once...

Yes, 'under God' was added later, during the McCarthy years, out of fear of the Communists...you knew that, right?

And the composition of the US is mostly Christian, yes.
