Apology ‘not enough’, say survivors of US drone attack in Kabul - they demand accountability & financial compensation for their losses

This was heartbreaking to read. I agree with the sentiment of others that financial reparations and a new life elsewhere are the least we can do. I’m not sure how easy that is for us to execute, given that we abandoned our embassy there and apparently trashed the airport on our way out.

I think the Trump-vs-Biden stuff is stupid and reeks of partisan rancor. Neither of them are directly responsible for stuff like this and blaming either is a convenient way to shield those who are actually to blame. This was criminal behavior by some individuals within our armed forces who basically committed accidental manslaughter and they are the ones we should go after.

I also agree with the sentiment that this has been going on for decades so it’s curious the last one imparts more impact somehow?

Finally, it’s sad that this accident will likely overshadow the ~150 deliberately murdered by ISIS-K just a short time before the drone strike.

Those poor children.I wept when I seen their photos.Biden had them killed.
Look, I realize you wept tears of joy at the thought of being able to run into the Internet and write something bad about Biden, but you needn’t admit to it so publicly.

Hmm.

Defense Minister Austin must resign because of this huge mistake and the US must pay millions in compensation to the relatives.
Ya know what else? Something to think about.
Can you think of a more devious way for the Tolley-bahn to eliminate one of their internal enemies than to say he's ISIS-K and then tell gullible American military leaders that he'll be driving a white Toyota Corolla?

You do not live in the United States.

Right?

So you probably do not understand why Secretary Austin will NOT resign and especially why the Administration would NOT dare fire him.

Leeeeeeet me take wild guess. Something to do with light absorption coefficients? A high light absorption coefficient affords some protection from accountability in the left. Plus Senile Joe owes a debt of gratitude to Rep Clyburn. If there is one single individual responsible for Senile Joe at the White House, it is Rep Clyburn.

The USS Biden was dead in the waters in the Democratic primaries, facing strong headwinds from that mischievous senior citizen from Vermont, Red Bernie. It was at that point that Clyburn stepped in and read everyone the riot act. The pack of donkeys all coalesced behind Senile Joe, paving his way to the White House. And Senile Joe didn't have to do anything anymore. There was no need for Senile Joe to resort to his days of infamy as Master Plagiariser. Senile Joe was just stored away in a bunker as others did the job. Senile Joe emerged only in time to take Oath of Office.

Clyburn was the Kingmaker. And Austin is one of the King's men.

You must have been in a coma from 2017-2020 if you think the last guy had any measure of accountability.

Pure projection.
Seriously. The only serious debate to be had here is about the drone strike program itself and what counts as accountability in these types of situations, because this is certainly not the first and won't be the last if it continues. The strikes are only as good as the intelligence that's obtained and analyzed, and there will always be a margin of error because these strikes have often been when in non-combat situations. This increases the chances innocent people will be part of those killed in the strike.

The US has handled this by PR actions (public apologies etc.) and compensating the families, but that tends to go over like a lead balloon, because what remains is dead family members killed despite that they are non-combatants and no one in the US is held accountable.

You have a point. It is an old trick in the book, going back to 2001 when the US first assaulted Fortress Taliban. It was suspected at the time that local assets on the ground would call air strikes to settle scores

By the way, it is said that Rep. Clyburn rightly deserves to be the Speaker of the House.

He has been gracious not to make a big stink about this injustice.

Nancy, I understand, created a fancy-sounding title for him in order to placate her critics.

But she kept the Speakership -- despite all her hypocritical talk about equality and equity. Just like a lot of Dems!

Suddenly the Trumpists "care" about civilian casualties. Do you people have any civilians how many we killed and got killed in Iraq and Afghanistan? Well over 100,000.

Shall we go back and see what now-"outraged" persons said when Trump loosened Obama rules designed to reduce civ casualties in drone strikes? Or do we remember that it more or less a uniform "weak wuss Obama tied our military's hands! Yay Trump! KILL THEM CIVS!"

Where are all the threads you previously started?

You knew this had gone bad when the Biden administration started saying information about those killed in the strike was "classified" after first bragging about the "over horizon" capabilities to stop terrorist. No names of those killed, only, high profile planners and facilitators. Well, not so much.
By the way. Anyone heard how many Americans are stilled trapped in Afghanistan?

And yours?

Democrats and accountability are never found in the same room together.
Expect more lies from #teambiden, while his supporters screech and deflect in Trump meltdowns.
Has anyone seen the Vice President do anything in the past 6 months? year?

Yours?

Financial restitution is the least we can do, though we’ve been murdering the shit out of civilians there for 20 years and am wondering why only the last incident is so politically explosive.

I, too, am totally befuddled by why this one strike is the only bad one.

diplomatically, we can probably arrange it...with another country...like the UK or Germany.
We could probably get them into France, right about now……..

I think you can hazard a guess as to what makes this one different.
;)

I'm curious how many threads any of the critics of these current drone strike casualties did the same for the 70 civilians killed during the previous administration. Drone strikes have been carried out through not only Afghanistan, but Pakistan, Somalia, and Yemen. To me, the bigger question is the drone program itself and how the US is held accountable for these casualties. If you live in any of these countries, you not only have the threats of your day to day life, but potentially death by US missile if you happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

" Accountability " !
That's old news .
What the hell is it anyway, and besides who has time for that ?
Can't you see I am busy " saving lives " through my infrastructure plans .

Excellent. That should put France one step closer to Islamic Emirates of France!

It sends a message of indifference that America is not being accountable for the people they killed.
With Trump, the mob demanded heads, and they got them. With Biden, the mob is silent and the people responsible for 13 dead Americans and 10 dead Afghan civilians will continue to fail upward in the Biden administration.

Like this message?

“This was a mission that was started before I got here. This was something that was, you know, just they wanted to do. They came to see me. They explained what they wanted to do, the generals, who are very respected,” he said. “My generals are the most respected that we’ve had in many decades I believe. And they lost Ryan.”

These crumb crunching " High Value Isis Operatives " needed to be liquidated , and you heard that first from President Biden .
I stand by our President , and hope that we can take care of more of these Isis Children in the same manner , by hellfire .

It's long past time to suspend the drone strike program until we can get a full review of its procedures. It has killed way too many civilians over the years.

For civilian deaths resulting from drone strikes? I don't recall anything on that during the previous administration, and there was an uptick in drone strikes compared to the Obama administration. From a transparency perspective, the Trump administration also cancelled an Obama executive order requiring annual reports on people killed as a result of drone strikes and other attacks.

Time is running out on their little lives due the change in media narrative so badly needed by our President at this critical moment .

It's been a questionable practice form its inception. In combat operations you can see it being more viable, but in non-combat situation it creates all sorts of problems because the strikes happen in outside of a war zone, and attempts to make a city square or a wedding a "war zone" rests on pretty flimsy footing.

You know, your deflection is even more pathetic with this apples to oranges comparison.
But, but Twump!

Since 2003 over 200,000 Afghans have been killed by US forces.

Are you saying that, up until 29 AUG 21, not a single "innocent bystander" was killed by US forces?

If you are NOT saying that, up until 29 AUG 21, not a single "innocent bystander" was killed by US forces - are you saying that the survivors of every single one of the "innocent bystanders" killed by US forces should be compensated by the US government?

If you are saying that the current administration should be purged because of what happened on 29 AUG 21, what was your position when the same thing happened under the outgone administration (please provide links to your posts calling for the resignations and blaming the President for what happened)?

How about we stop using barbaric weapons to commit extrajudicial executions?
