At present, using the number of actual confirmed cases of Covid-19 infection in the United States of America, 1.9% of the population can be counted as part of the percent required for herd immunity to take effect. It's hoped that the development of a safe and effective vaccine will provide a huge boost to that percent. Meanwhile, the confirmed progress of the disease adds about 0.5% per month. That it will take many, many months for herd immunity to occur naturally is a given. The effect of the vaccine can be dramatic in the effort to control the disease.
There is, though, an anti-vaccination movement in the US. To the extent that it keeps people from availing themselves of a vaccine should one become available. it militates against eventual herd immunity.
Regards, stay safe 'n well. Remember the Big 3: masks, hand washing and physical distancing.
