Antarctica gains ice for first time in decades, reversing trend of mass loss, study finds (5 Viewers)

see PEPFAR, e.g.,) is proof of how lacking in any human concern they are.
PEPFAR is operating under the Continuing Resolution with funding of $4.25 billion. A waiver was issued in February to continue HIV treatment and care, prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and HIV testing. That sounds like "human concern" to me.
Do you really think DOGE examined each project to determine their efficacy?
No. In many cases all one has to do is read the grant application, filter out the BS, and recognize that it's a boondoggle.
Do you really think those 20-something Musk acolytes were qualified to do that? They didn't even bother to pretend.
I suggest that you check the resumes of the people on the DOGE team, instead of relying on gossip. They are far more qualified than the left would have you believe.
I wrote "dogma," not "doctrine."
OK.

A surprising shift is underway at the bottom of the world. After decades of contributing to rising sea levels, Antarctica’s massive ice sheet has started growing again — at least for now.

A study published this week in Science China Earth Sciences finds that the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) experienced a record-breaking mass gain between 2021 and 2023, largely due to anomalous increases in precipitation. The rebound is especially significant in East Antarctica, where four major glacier basins had previously shown signs of destabilization.

Interesting, but I'm not sure how this is possible considering what Al Gore and other climate alarmist have been telling us. The climate is historically cyclic.
"...at least for now". There's an old saying, 'one Swallow doesn't make a Summer'. I heard similar from a global warming sceptic who was quite certain that the snow in his back yard was evidence that global warming was a hoax. The same goes for this 'revelation'. Antarctic ice extent fluctuates annually; some years there's more, but more and more frequently, there's less. And during some periods of record lows there are big increases.
Read, learn...

Try doing some actual research first. This is a temporary increase in a period of record lows. Happens all the time.

this is only one aspect of many of climate change, thinking this somehow proves something is silly.
global climate changes have many implications, not all of which can be predicted, some of which will no doubt move in the "wrong" direction as this does.
Lets see if we have a permanent change in the entire global climate before declaring that prior science is "wrong"

They explained, pay attention when you read. More rain.
Rain. You know, the stuff that happens when it is too warm to snow.
Plus the colder it is, the less precipitation that can fall.
It is common sense, in other words that increased rain at the poles would lead to more ice.

See?

Jesus Christ, I picked PEPFAR as one outstanding example of hundreds of programs helping people around the world. Have they all been restored? No, they have not.

Starting on the first day of his second term, President Trump issued several executive actions that have fundamentally changed foreign assistance. These included: an executive order which called for a 90-day review of foreign aid; a subsequent “stop-work order” that froze all payments and services for work already underway; the dissolution of USAID, including the reduction of most staff and contractors; and the cancellation of most foreign assistance awards. Although a waiver to allow life-saving humanitarian assistance was issued, it has been limited to certain services only and difficult for program implementers to obtain. In addition, while there have been several legal challenges to these actions, there has been limited legal remedy to date. As a result, U.S. global health programs have been disrupted and, in some cases, ended.

As for PEPFAR,
  • Funding freeze/stop-work order: The stop-work order initially froze all PEPFAR programming and services, halting existing work in the field, including provision of antiretroviral therapy. Because it halted payments, many implementers had to let go of thousands of staff and end some services.
  • USAID was the main government implementing agency for PEPFAR, obligating 60% of its bilateral assistance in FY 2023. Without USAID and most of its staff, PEPFAR’s implementation capacity has been affected. In addition, recent announcements of reductions at CDC, PEPFAR’s second largest implementing agency (obligating 37% in FY 2023), could further affect PEPFAR.

Hilarious. Untrained 20-year olds can read technical medical language and "filter out the BS" from thousands of applications at a glance. Sure.

Qualified in what? How many have PhDs and years of experience in medical research? Not a single one.
Incompetence + arrogance + a lack of compassion = DOGE. And MAGA in general.

It should be noted most ice gains are in the interior of Antarctica while coastal ates still lose ice. According to NASA, Antarctica lost 120 billion tons of ice per year from 2002-2023. Sea ice levels around Antarctica are at the second lowest in record. While ice gains are a small rebound effect, overall ice is still at a loss.

My favorite example that totally eviscerates the climate change scam is this exchange between Thomas Massie and John Kerry. How it started:

Massie: Secretary Kerry, I want to read part of your statement back to you. “Instead of convening a kangaroo court, the president might want to talk with the educated adults he once trusted to fill his top national security positions.” It sounds like you’re questioning the credentials of the president’s advisers currently, but I don’t think we should question your credentials today. Isn’t it true you have a science degree from Yale?

Kerry: A bachelor of arts degree.

Massie: Is it a political science degree?

Kerry: Yes, political science.

Massie: So how do you get a bachelor of arts in a science [degree]?

Kerry: Well, it’s liberal arts education and degree, it’s a bachelor.

Massie: OK, so it’s not really science. So I think it’s somewhat appropriate that someone with a pseudoscience degree is here pushing pseudoscience in front of our committee today.

Kerry: Are you serious? This is really, seriously happening here?

Massie: You know what? It is serious, you’re calling the president’s Cabinet a kangaroo court, is that serious?

Kerry: I’m not calling his Cabinet a kangaroo court, I’m calling this committee he’s putting together a kangaroo committee.

Massie: Are you saying he doesn’t have educated adults there now?

Kerry: I don’t know who he it yet, because it’s secret.

Massie: What's the consensus on parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere?

Kerry: About 406 today. 350 being the level that have said that scientists have said is dangerous.

Massie:Are you aware that since mammals walked the planet the average has been over 1000 parts per million?

Kerry: Yeah but we weren't walking the planet. We now know definitely at no point during at least the last 800,000 years has atmospheric CO2 been as high as it is today.

Massie: The reason you chose 800,000 years ago is because for 200 million years before that it was greater than it is today.

Kerry: Yeah but there weren't human beings. I mean there was a different world folks. We didn't have 7 billion people.

Massie: So how did we get to 2000 parts per million if we humans weren't here?

Kerry: Because there were all kinds of geologic events happening on Earth which spewed up

Massie: Did Geology stop when we got on the planet?

Kerry: Mr chairman this is just not a serious conversation

Massie: Your testimony is not serious

Antarctica was never in a state of loss outside of cyclical pattererns. The agenda dr8ven liars love to sorak of west Antarcutixa lisibg ice, but East abtarctica has been gainibf ice all along.

West Antarctica is along the "Ring of Fire" and has active volcanoes from time to time.

Well...sure...because...climate change................

And childhood vaccinations have been traditional since I started school more than 8 decades ago.
[I had to truncate some of your quotes to stay under the 5,000 word limit]
Not any more, thanks to MAGA. Texas. Measles.
Is that why RFK Jr. questions vaccinations, and does that make his questioning a good thing?
No, it makes him an irresponsible, reckless idiot. Question it privately, research it privately, and then using your good judgement and you deep technical knowledge, challenge the theories through regular channels.
In contrast, RFK has no professional training in biology, chemistry, or health sciences. He used his famous name to peddle quack remedies while questioning medical science as part of his sales pitch.
He's a quack and a conspiracy theorist that normal people know to ignore. He was given a prominent place in the Trump Admin because he is right at home with the other MAGA quacks.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. needs to stop saying vaccines are “a personal choice.”
They’re not. Speed limits aren’t a personal choice. Smoking on airplanes isn’t a personal choice. Paying taxes isn’t a personal choice. In wartime, the draft isn’t a personal choice. Sacrifices are what make us a nation instead of 340 million selfish hunter-gatherers. Each of us gives up some personal freedoms so we all stay alive. Opposing lifesaving mandates is childish libertarian nonsense.

You might want to examine the programs that have been cut finally.
Did that only promote compassion and an open mind to people's differences? Yeah, I can see why MAGA hates that.
The assumption that USAID is a benevolent program only dedicated to health is fallacious.
Some people think that if $70 or $80 out of a $100 gets to people in desperate need, it's money well spent. Others focus only on the $20 or $30 that didn't make it through the pipeline, for many reasons. And there's always some of that.
So it's an easy excuse.
No, I would know that ObamaCare, passed by Democrats, is available with such huge deductibles that, to make it usable, the government must provide large subsidies for care and premiums. I would also know that it was passed under reconciliation when Democrat leadership lamented that it was the closest they could get to socialized medicine at the time. I would also know that it was not done for altruistic purposes but to buy votes at the cost of those subsidies.
Sure, laws are only ever passed for "buying votes." Well, Obamacare was a total bargain compared to the Republicans Great Vote Buy this fall when they pass a massive $5 trillion tax cut for the rich.
No, and DOGE is going into the DoD.
Yeah, they're taking books on Jackie Robinson out of the West Point libraries and cutting funds for ensuring women's needs are being met in combat, such as properly fitted body armor. Wow, that'll balance the budget in no time.
He fired 14 of them because they are responsible for identifying WF&A - but didn't do it, or didn't make it work.
Trump is firing cops and replacing them with cult members who will enable grifting because that's what Trump and his stooges do.
Medicare, itself, is taken by fraud for about $60 billion a year, and DOGE has and is finding ways to stop it.
I would love to see a competent effort in that area. So far, DOGE gives me no confidence they are equipped to do that.
Spoken by a Lib who has no interest in government efficiency.
You have no basis to make that assertion.
Remember that Clinton fired 400,000 government employees.
Oh, cute. Is that story going around MAGA circles as an example of how unfairly the media is treating Trump's savage and reckless cuts? Al Gore's Reinventing Government eliminated over 100 programs, over 250,000 federal jobs, and consolidated over 800 agencies. And they did it gradually and deliberately, with much input from the agencies themselves, while also working cooperatively with the government employee unions.

I thought libs had no interest in government efficiency. Which is it?

The federal government's efficiency must be amazing since the number of federal employees has remained constant for the last sixty years while the population roughly doubled.

From the article linked.

Seems like the East gained ice due to unusual rain patterns. Now the question is, were they just happenstance rain patterns, or a new trend? And if a new trend, what is driving it and is it a good thing for humans or bad?
It is cyclical. Just like most of nature.

This from the Wall Street Journal is pretty funny:

See How Government Spending Is Up Even as Musk Touts Savings

Federal spending is higher since President Trump took office even as the Department of Government Efficiency slashes contracts, cuts jobs and ends diversity programs.
A Wall Street Journal analysis of daily financial statements issued by the Treasury Department found government spending since the inauguration is $154 billion more than in the same period in 2024 during the administration of former President Joe Biden.
