I didn't hear the man in the house ask who was at his door, not saying that makes him guilty, but it may have helped. He could have asked for ID, could have called 911 before opening up, and told the police at the door he was doing so. So many things went wrong. The police should have made very sure the man knew it was the police. The failures here are multiple and on both sides.
One thing I have noticed with the majority of people that come to my door, day or night, they always move back to the edge of my porch, almost never do I have someone stand right up at the door. I typically look out the window before I open the door, even during the day.
