New paper finds Antarctic sea ice retreated during the 1940's when CO2 was 'safe' & not since
In short, Antarctic sea ice retreated between 1935 and 1950, when atmospheric CO2 was a lot lower, and has not retreated since then despite higher atmospheric CO2.
Antarctic ice extent recently hit a high record at 900,000 square km above the mean.
Diatoms and biomarkers evidence for major changes in sea ice conditions prior the instrumental period in Antarctic Peninsula. Quaternary Science Reviews
In the past the IPCC held Antarctic ice extent out as an index of global warming:

Sea ice in the Arctic and around Antarctica responds directly to climate change and may, if properly monitored, become increasingly important for detecting climate change. IPCC Third Assessment Report, Cryosphere Processes, Box 7.1
