An electric car for everyone

Electric super cars and what not are smoke and mirrors.

What is that one the tesla that out performs a Corvette?

Yeah if you actually drive the thing like a Corvette, the battery lasts about 15% of advertized range.

PASS.

I would buy one as a daily use car, as long as the price is no more than a comparable gasoline powered car. But we would still need something for those long trips from here to AZ and back...

SO you would buy 2 cars? How does that save money?

No, WE would keep one of the 2 gasoline powered cars we have now.
And if it was just about saving money, we would all be driving beat up old cars like the cubans do...:2razz:

Those cars rock, have you seen what they do with them?

They do without money, without actual parts, it is rather amazing the natural engineering they do with them

got a neighbor who would be right at home there...he can fix anything old with junk he has in his shop....rarely throws anything away.

Thats simply not true. Electric motors have a power curve that is far steeper than an internal combustion engine. If you have a car powered by an electric motor and a gasoline engine with the same horsepower, the electric car will accelerate faster. Furthermore, the power to weight ratio is far higher for electric motors than combustion engines. From a pure power plant standpoint, electric is far superior to gas.

If you drive any performance car to its maximum capabilities, the range is far shorter. The Veyron runs out of gas in 12 minutes at top speed. Electric cars are no better or worse than gasoline cars in this regard.

Batteries are currently much less energy dense than gasoline, making them less suitable for production cars with a 200+ mile range. However, for 1/4 drag racing, range is not an issue. Power to weight is all that really matters, and in that electric motors are superior.

Not quite...
The weight or the electric motor may be less (an aluminum engine is quite light) but the weight of the "fuel" is heavier. Altho batteries are heavy, they can be re-used after a recharge, gasoline is one time use and you buy more. But, I think they are coming, and when the old Impala wears out, I will consider getting one. Almost all of our driving in the Logan, Utah area is short trip. WE are within 5 to 7 miles of everything related to shopping, and nearly all of it is in one area only 4.5 miles from our house.
Air conditioning from batteries will certainly shorten the range quite a bit, and so far I haven't seen anyl comments from the makers on that issue.

Sales of electric cars have fallen by more than half this year, according to figures released two days after the Government’s climate change advisory body predicted a huge increase.

Only 156 electric cars were sold from January to October, compared with 374 for the same period last year.

Nice Car Company, one of the two main British distributors of electric cars, went into administration yesterday. Set up in 2006, the company had been selling an all-electric version of the French-made Aixam Mega. It had also planned to bring a range of new models to market by the end of the year. However, sales dropped to fewer than one car a week.

Richard Bremner, editor of Clean Green Cars, which specialises in green motoring, said: “While volumes are still tiny, any drop in electric car sales will come as a shock. Buyers could be holding off for cars from mainstream manufacturers, although they may still have years to wait.”

especially if oil goes back up in price...

Batteries are heavier than gas, but power to weight only refers to power, not energy storage. Power is measured in watts, while energy storage in measured in joules. Electric motors have much higher power to weight (watts/kilogram), while batteries have inferior energy density (joules/kilogram).

Determining which is better for a given situation is based on the amount of power you need, and the total amount of energy you need. Drag racing requires lots of power to accelerate fast, but since you only go 1/4 mile, it requires little energy. Driving on the interstate requires little power to go at 70mph, but requires a lot of energy to drive for hundreds of miles. That makes electric better for drag racing, and gasoline better for long trips.

Oil prices were way up for most of the year, yet sales were not.

Sorry your theory, fails.

Fine, an electric car for everyone but Mr Vicchio. :2razz:

Why would I want an EC? I have to make trips in excess of 50 miles on a weekly basis.. hate to break down cause I need to "plug in".

There are more than 2 variables in the economics equation...:2razz:

so, what DO you drive?

I used to drive a Pontiac Sunfire, 5 spd manual, but some asshat tried to steal it, couldn't drive a stick and rolled it down a ramp in a parking garage into 5 other cars.

So now I drive a 2008 Ford Focus.. damn thing is boring to drive.. autmatic, 4 door, no giddy up. However, it gets 35MPG so I don't complain too much.

So you wouldn't pay extra to save the Earth? What a phoney.

I suppose you already have one?:2razz:
I bet I am already doing more to save the earth than most on this forum, including you.
The main reason an electric car costs a lot more than a gasoline car is because of scale. When they are making an equal amount of each, the price difference will be small....
