Americans disapprove of anthem protest and Trump's response, poll finds

Right, and why are they ashamed of America anyway? This is the same country that gave them the freedom to express themselves and show their hatred for the anthem, the flag, police officers, and whatever else they're pissed about.

These multi-millionaires who accomplished nothing except playing a stupid game would probably be on welfare if it wasn't for football because they're too unskilled and uneducated to obtain real jobs that require brains and hard work. Some players end up down and out when they retire anyway because they wasted their millions on frivolous things.
I'm curious what's gonna happen the next time one of these owners wants tax payers to build them a new stadium.

All of this is going local now. Some High schools in my area are now deciding whether to continue to play the national anthem at the football games. Some players are also taking knees, even some cheerleaders. The schools are reacting in the wrong way. Looks like Trump accomplished what Kapernick (sp) could not.

Great point, and this is something else I brought up last weekend in another thread. These major sports leagues are worth billions but at the same time are sucking on the government tit because they demand new stadiums and major upgrades to existing ones, all at the taxpayers' expense. Some people claim the NFL and the other major leagues are fine examples of capitalism which is total nonsense.

I don't know of any major city in this country that didn't have their pro-sports venues subsidized through tax money. I blame the voters who approved these initiatives. I'm not sure how it will be going forward but my guess is there will be less support from voters to fund their stadiums. More people are getting sick of these overpaid athletes and the NFL making money on the taxpayers' backs. If they want a new stadium, let them pay for it themselves.

Yes less support but trying to be objective here, nfl teams cater to the larger market cities which means they are generally based in liberal areas. For instance Texas is a solid red state but Houston and Dallas are very liberal. It's gonna be interesting how it all unfolds.

This illustrates the gray area that hasn’t been talked about very much. For instance, I disapprove of the protest, but I also disapproved of Trump’s comments. And I don’t find the protest inherently disrespectful either.

Those that believe in freedom of speech and expression are going to side with the players.

Those who are in denial of the systematic racism within some police departments or don't like people of other races are going to disapprove and be angry at the players.

Seems pretty simple.

To be fair, I think it’s possible to believe in free speech and expression while also taking issue with the protest.

As with most issues, to me there seems to be a sincere lack of empathy by the loudest voices on this issue. On the one hand, no one can seem to fathom how someone could find those actions disrespectful, while on the other, no one is asking why some players have felt the need to protest. Instead, folks choose to be dismissive, which is a shame.

I spent several years of my life in the Army, and I don’t regret a second of it. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. That said, the national anthem and the flag don’t have the iconographic impact on me that they seem to for others. I’m not offended when people choose not to participate in those ceremonial things, and I don’t think that by choosing not to participate that they can’t maintain respect and reverence for the sacrifices of servicemen, though I can empathize with those that do feel that way. I also think that the protests have largely been a failure since they haven’t sparked the necessary conversations, and maybe they should take a different approach.

Why is the anthem played at anything other than an international event?

It's difficult for me to empathize with people who are in denial of some systematic racism. I disagree that the activity has not drawn attention to the issue given the publicity it's been given, the amount of news stories about it, and less so, the number of threads on this discussion board about the issue.

Sure, some do. A whole lot more don’t.

Certainly some are in denial, but there are many who just need help understanding the when, where, and how of racial inequality, and few people seem willing to engage them. We have to be willing to do that, even if it’s difficult and unpleasant. As for the protest itself, it’s succeeded halfway in that it’s definitely gained the attention of people, but it has not sparked conversation about racial inequality at the level that it needs to in order to be successful. The fact that it has devolved into “protesting the anthem” is indicative of its limitations. So I would hope that folks can find the empathy to engage one another and that those protesting can find a way to control the discussion around their efforts.

I do too, but if one of them was a player in the NFL that wanted to seig heil (however that's spelled) the US flag during the anthem, I'd be cool with the NFL disallowing it.

Doubt that would happen. It is easy to conjure up such things as a Nazi salute. Odds of it happening, close to nil.

I just have a hard time understanding how easily the Right is disassociating the player's stated motivations for the protest. I know the Right doesn't get on board with the "police are abusing black people" thing, but protesting for less intrusion by the police state into your lives is about as conservative as you can get. Its not like they are protesting for genocide of the Jews. That should matter. The moral and intellectual relativism on display here and in the broader conversation blows my mind.

Why is the anthem played at anything other than an international event?

I've seen the Anthem played before stock car races and demolition derbys...They've reduced it t a joke...Some kind of crazy loyalty oath...It should be reserved for solemn national occasions...Not for every public event

The majority of people disagree with the players.

Where's the numbers on that?

And I have plenty of friends that I disagree with on this. Doesnt make me give up the friendships or even disrespect them.

And most are still watching the NFL.

They work for him? Why is it any of his business. He is just pissed at the NFL because he didn't have enough money or credit to buy the bills. If he had he could order his players to stand.

Trump should ask Putins buddies for another loan, he can buy his own team.

Somewhere in the 90 percentile range of people have less freedom in the workplace than these overrated overpaid NFL jocks because business and politics simply don't mix too well, and it creates a hostile working environment. Obviously the NFL commissioner is too clueless and corrupt to understand this, but then he doesn't want to offend his precious players.

A business does what's best for the business in the long run.

And in most cases has the right to do so.

It's not about the $$ these players make, it's about the stance of the NFL (and the visibility of national media coverage)

And the same is up to other employers. Employees have choices too. I'd like to be able to carry my firearm to work...but I cant if I wish to keep working there as an honest person complying with a policy I agreed to at employment. (It's not against the law to do so, but an employer policy).

When we play it at the opening of our competitions, and at rodeos (some of the things I attend), most people take it very seriously.

I would fight for their right to engage in this peaceful civil disobedience even though personally I find it disrespectful

Last week 92% of all Tickets were sold...This week will likely be same
This is at least the 2nd time you have made that claim without providing a link.
