Hundreds of students and alumni of American University of Kabul gathered at a safe house on Sunday and boarded buses in what was supposed to be a final attempt at evacuation on U.S. military flights, students and alumni said.

But after seven hours of waiting for clearance to enter the airport gates and driving around the city, the group met a dead end: Evacuations were permanently called off. The airport gates remained a security threat, and civilian evacuations were ending Monday.

“I regret to inform you that the high command at HKIA in the airport has announced there will be no more rescue flights,” said an email sent to students from the university administration on Sunday afternoon, which was shared with The New York Times.

Now that the Biden administration has called an end to evacuation efforts, the second stage of this catastrophe is now beginning.

Biden has no shame.Trump would never had done this.

This could be turned into a reality show on Netflix

"Escape from Afghanistan"

Are they U.S. citizens?
Suddenly a liberal care about legal immigration status?

"AUAF’s story reminds us that, however misconceived or mismanaged U.S. efforts in Afghanistan might have been, there were bright spots, and that, in any case, real people — flesh-and-blood human beings — staked their lives on this country’s promises. We dare not betray them now."

We betrayed them.

So, they're not U.S. citizens. Ok.

Yeah, because these things are the same.
A green card holders' status is indeed equal to a green card holder's status.

How many green card holders will it take, do you think, before folks decide they are as mad about it as they are about Kashoggi?

Or, do you think, is it really all about whether or not someone from My Tribe is in the White House. If it lets me hate the Other Guy, it's terrible, if it's embarrassing to my guy, well, that's different....

The true catastrophe began when OBL escaped and then lo and behold, the US would rebuild the country

A democracy in Afghanistan.

I was for finding, capturing killing OBL but when it went to nation building the war was lost.
After a few years that was obvious
But ending the war was not possible was it?
Conveniently avoided by Republicans
1 war was right, staying was BS
2nd war was pure BS, nothing on that eh?

I don’t think I have posted by “team.”
You’ll have to correct me if I am wrong.

How well did the SI Visas go under Trump
Did you ever post your concerns? my opinion is no
Never saw Rs here post a thread about their concerns for Afghan SIV's/vulnerable here. Have you seen any? I never saw 1, not 1 thread
Now people suddenly care, like vultures feeding on the many soon to be dead. Using this for political purposes and ignoring their own past

Not like it was ever a secret now was it, SIV's problems?
Narry a care or concern for local Afghans who worked for NATO, many risked their lives for the US. but the FFem was strong under Trump.

A homeland security adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence accused the Trump administration of distorting the truth about Afghan refugees, writing on Twitter that the former president and Stephen Miller, his top immigration adviser, sought to prevent the refugees from entering the United States.

Correction, Trump has no shame. Biden is a politician.
Just to add, people have voices. Who does speak for those who don't?

Carry on with the partisan bs or the trolling. To all, please have a heart.

The Biden disaster continues. "We planned for every contigency". This was the plan? I believe it was. Shameful.

The group was also told the university had given their names to Taliban militants running checkpoints around the airport, the Times reported.
Seemed like a good idea at the time?

Was Kashoggi a U.S. citizen?

I recall people being very upset about what happened to him.
I thought this thread was about Afghanistan. Why are you talking about something else?

Yeah, one involves way more people.
How long has Afghanistan been a dangerous place to be? Twenty years under US military. Before that the USSR had a ten year occupation. Khashoggi was trying to get married, entering a Saudi consulate in Turkey. Anyone who had the means and the necessary paperwork should have been gone years ago.
This is similar to week-end warriors that get themselves over-matched back-country skiing, hiking or climbing and then want all resources used to bail them out of poor life-choices. How many of those left in Afghanistan were lured there?

What is happening at that university is unfortunate, but at the end of the day, we spent 2 trillion dollars and 6294 US lives (soldiers + contractors) to basically achieve nothing.

Even if we waited until after the 2024 or 2028 election, we would just spend more money and lives to be where we are today.

The Afghanis are going to need to fix their own culture.

Are the students and alumni even green card holders? Article does not say.

No, he would have just repeated his favourite line; "I take no responsibility at all". If you think someone as chaotically inept as Trump could organise anything more complicated than a McDonalds order, you're fooling yourself.

Here is a non-paywalled source

One horrifying note...

Members of the group were further alarmed to learn their names and passport information had been shared with members of the Taliban who were guarding airport checkpoints.
