U.S. regulators and 17 states are suing Amazon over allegations the e-commerce behemoth abuses its position in the marketplace to inflate prices on and off its platform, overcharge sellers and stifle competition.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in federal court in Amazon’s home state of Washington, is the result of a yearslong investigation into the company’s businesses and one of the most significant legal challenges brought against it in its nearly 30-year history.

The Federal Trade Commission and states that joined the lawsuit allege Amazon is violating federal and state antitrust laws. They are asking the court to issue a permanent injunction that they say would prohibit Amazon from engaging in its unlawful conduct and loosen its “monopolistic control to restore competition.”

Amazon (but not Apple) is abusing its monopoly power, even though there are dozens of other places people can buy most of the same things. Amazing.

First Qualcomm (great job, by the way, FTC), now this. It's like they can't stand seeing US companies succeed, unless they're Apple, of course.

Amazon has a ton of competition - see Wal-Mart, Costco, Shopify, etc...

There prices are competitive with others but they most definitely take too much from their sellers.
Sell somewhere else and see what the international exposure is.

It's not the success that's the issue, it's the methods used to reach it.

Bust 'em!

And let that be only the beginning of a huge blue wave of monopoly busting.

Monopolies ripe to be busted:

Social media companies
Google
Banking
Insurance
Ticketmaster

Why is Amazon uniquely responsible for giving mom and pop shops international exposure?

What, like having rules, such as the rule that sellers can't essentially use the platform for free advertisement, while undercutting it on other platforms?

What monopoly does Amazon have, other perhaps giving independent sellers access to sell their products in a huge market that they'd never be able to access on their own?

Yup, as long as they leave Apple alone. Can't touch Apple.

Go for apple too.

I just think Google is worse than apple IMO. Google has almost as much influence over our day to day lives at the government.

What's the worst way in which Google has influence over your life?

How much of your money have they taken? How much effort have they put into preventing you from using a competing platform?

That's the worst way in which Google influences your life? So what? Which of those companies can you not live without?

I can live without all of them.

I can live without everything Apple or Amazon does too.

That's not the point.

Tech companies have more information about us than the government, i want them all taken apart.

People complaining about people being demonetized by YouTube, the reason it matters is because YouTube has so much influence.

I'm not trying to get you to agree with my opinion.

What information do they have about you other what you give them by using their platform (for free, in most cases)? How does that harm you?

Like I said, i don't care if you agree with me.

I'm not asking you to agree with me. I'm trying to debate the issue. So far, you haven't really addressed my questions. But that's okay, no one is forcing you to use this platform either.

The existence of the data is a danger. There isn't anything I can say that is going to change your mind, and there isn't anything you can say that will change my mind.

People don't debate online, they try to prove why they are right. let's not pretend that actual debate occurs here.

Why do we shop on Amazon, why do we Google, why do we watch YouTube? They have what we want. They lured us in because they are convenient.
Why do we shop at Walmart? It is more convenient then going from the farmers market to the pharmacy to the bakery and the grocer.
We enabled them because they catered to our wants.
