The White House claimed on Tuesday that Amazon was acting in a “hostile and political” manner by choosing to display how much President Donald Trump’s tariffs would increase the cost of imported goods.

It's pretty standard practice in the United States for retailers to list sales taxes separately from the item price. Hotels/airlines often display other travel-related taxes too. Some states charge an excise tax on products like alcohol/cigarettes/marijuana which are also listed separately.

Why does the Trump Administration think his import taxes should be any different? Why is it "hostile" to display it, when Trump assures us this will be a great thing for America? If Trump isn't ashamed of it, then there's no reason for him to try to hide it.

The Trumpists do so hate the truth……..

So? Amazon is allowed to act in a “hostile and political” manner if they choose to. We have free speech in this country -- at least for now.

It's clear that the WH just doesn't like it when consumers know that the price jumps are due to Trump tariffs. Too f'ing bad. Trump is admitting that his tariffs (e.g. best word in the English language) aren't going well.

According to the OP article:
“This is a hostile and political act by Amazon,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday morning after speaking with the president. “Why didn’t Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?” Leavitt added.

Why? Because the temporary inflation under Biden was due to market forces from constrained supply chains, not a self-inflicted brain-dead tariff policy.

I'm all for cost breakdowns. Personally, I like the idea of full disclosure across the board for consumers. If wholesalers and retailers offered markup price information for their products, I'd respect their transparency and choose to do business with them. Not blindly, of course, but anyone with that level of transparency wouldn't be trying to put themselves out of business by gouging anything. The policy itself would put their ethics on full display.

It'll never happen, of course, but I'd like to see one business try it out at least.

I contend that every retailer should have a separate item on every receipt that reads “tariff tax” and show the amount.

Every time.
Yep.

I think it is good business. 🤷‍♀️

Taxes are displayed as a separate line item on receipts. Tariffs should be also. Universally.

Consumers are better able to make more informed decisions that way 🤷‍♀️

Love the obvious projection in claiming a “hostile and political act” from the Trump administration. Every act they they do fits that description.

I can't believe Bezos who turned into a Trump lackey will allow this.

Me neither. Bezos resigned as Amazon CEO in 2021 but still owns 9% of Amazon shares (worth billions).

Someone will be getting a pink slip.

From touting his tariffs as "nation-saving" to trying to hide their inflationary effects on consumers.

Trump wants it both ways.

Pretty much everything Trump complains about other people doing, he would do himself if he were in their shoes.

Trump wants folks to believe the “external revenue” myth (lie?) that US tariff costs are being paid by the exporting nation(s).

I would add that it should read “President Trump’s/Trump Administration Tariff tax”.

Looks like thr Press Secretary and the Treasury Secretary are up early this morning. Trump is no doubt still watching FOX in order to get his marching orders for the day.

In a world where facts can have bias,
it makes perfect sense that numbers can be hostile

Biden retained Trump’s tariffs on China and implemented other tariffs. Amazon didn’t itemize it then or any other time for that matter. What’s the motivation for doing it now?

Hostile politics will be the subject of an upcoming EO.

Everything The Trump administration does is about intimidation.

Whether it’s universities, the media, the judicial branch, business…

They continue to push just how far they can go and this type of rhetoric is a clear message that they’ll attempt to come after Amazon if they do things the President doesn’t like.

And the carrot is clear, they won’t pursue lawsuits and other regulatory functions for businesses that play ball…

It’s big government intimidation and corruption on a scale never seen in the modern era and it will destabilize the American business landscape.

Well done Trump fascists.
