Thoughts about this?
They only settled on obesity being a disease because they couldn't justify breathing being one.
Thoughts? Yeah ... soooooooooo much **** gonna come down because of this.
But ... question ... does Mayor Bloomberg run the AMA too?
Pass me some of those wings, a super big gulp and 4 or 5 twinkies while I ponder this request.
Everything is a disease these days...
Obesity is a disease. I am suprised it is just now being officially declared.
The American Medical Association declared obesity a disease, which means 90 million U.S. adults and children have a medical condition requiring treatment.
After a debate Tuesday, members of the AMA's House of Delegates rejected advice of their own experts and extended the new status for obesity to a condition that affects more than a third of U.S. adults and 17 percent of U.S. children, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The vote might pressure health insurance companies to reimburse physicians for the time-consuming task of discussing obesity's health risks with patients whose body mass index exceeds 30 and encourage doctors to direct their patients to weight-loss programs.....snip~

Well there we have it. The AMA has now declared Obesity a Disease. One that needs treatment. June 19, 2013. Thoughts about this?
Heya Bubba. :2wave: Well one thing is for sure.Plus they may even lose jobs over their weight. It will raise Obese Peoples Premiums up.
Get ready for the ballooning, literally and figuratively, of the disability claims industry and the creation of the new obesity bar in the American legal system.
I have not looked up the definiton of a disease for a long time but IIRC it is any deviation from the normal body function. Obsiety is a deviation. You guys need to calm down about this one, preventative medicine is cheaper. In the long run this will save money.
So Mak.....would you tell the AMA's Council on Science and Public Health to calm down on this one as well? What about the Physicians Groups and their arguments about medicalizing a condition. Do you think they might have an idea as to what they are looking at and why they are against such?
AMA's Council on Science and Public Health had outlined the benefits and drawbacks of classifying obesity as a disease. The council ultimately maintained that it could not "determine conclusively" whether obesity is a medical disease.....snip~

What about costing Obese people their Jobs? How about their costs going up and everyone else's to pitch-in for paying for all that additional time that Physicians will have to take?
Yes. They are concerned it will eventually cut into profits. One of the many huge problems with our system is the complete lack of focus on preventative care.
Really.....you think the doctors are looking at just cutting into profits? What about their time? Time for all of their Patients? What do you think they mean by medicalizing a condition?
But I did hear on the Radio. Mickey D's was Supersizing those Fries and Soft Drinks.
I am not really going to argue if an ounce of prevention is = to a pound of cure. It just does. If obesity is declared a disease the profession can be reimbuese for dietary counselling. That would reduce disease in the long run. Picture this, fewer quarter pounders with cheese, fewer simvastatins.
How about grade schools and high schools going back to having a Gym class every day? Recess. Think that might be like preventive?
Yet nothing to do with the Medical industry huh?

Most definitely a preventative. Good habits learned young can stave off a lot of problems. Not to say it will prevent the quirks of Mother Nature for some, but for most, exercise as such can only do good.
