Stop cultivating the Liberal double standard and see the word for the racial slur that it is.
Boy that freakin' white-hatin' Jeff Foxworthy! He's keepin' the white man down by talking about his own redneck culture.
I don't get where you equate it to the n-word. It's primarily used by white people about white people. Honkey or Cracker is the equivalent term (i.e. used by non-whites against whites).
Redneck is used more frequently by people CLAIMING to be one than I see it as an insult. It can be used as an insult, yes. It's a classist term, though. Not racist.
Please stop trying to play the "white victim" and simply point out that it's bad manners to insult others. But until you can get Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy to stop using the term, you're going to have a hard time convincing ANYONE that it's a racist term. Mainly - because it isn't.
Just like that racist Chris Rock, with all his nigger jokes. Right?
"A black ain't never stole from me...but a nigger has!" --Chris Rock
I guess since Chris Rock can use it, it's ok for anyone to use it. Yes?
You're still equating a classist term with a racist term. I don't think black rappers or comedians should use the n-word, either. But "redneck" is not the "n-word". A better equation from the black community is the (largely dated) term "high yellow" - which was an insult used by dark-skinned blacks against light-skinned blacks. Even then, that's truly a racial remark as opposed to classist remark.
Just as Rock reclaims the n-word, though. Foxworthy using redneck is a reclamation of that term. Most linguists believe that it was long used as a point of pride; but became an insult at least by the 1970s (probably earlier).
You can and should read The Redneck Manifesto by Jim Goad. It outlines who arguments like we are actually having right now are common distractions created for us by the wealthy. As long as they keep the working and middle classes fighting amongst themselves, they keep getting richer.
These things are merely distractions from real issues. Same with gays, abortion, etc. Both parties do it - but Republicans have gotten really good at it. They've gotten people to vote against their own self-interest because they've become delusional enough to believe that they'll one day join the wealthiest classes. And the Televangelists (who take people's money to line their pockets and build gigantic homes) have left Christ's message of "love the poor" to "abhor the poor". Oh, so the new excuse is, "classist"? You guys are really reaching.
So I ask cooler heads to prevail and those arguing that some offense has been made, remember all those time we've seen stories of over the top reactions to minor or non-existant racial slurs. And those arguing its no big deal, well kudos keep at it.
The next time an hispanic, or black person says something stupid are you going to call it, "spickitude"? Or, "niggertude"? I'm betting, uh, no!
Vive la Double Standard!!!!
School Board revisted the issue and voted Not to have the mural changed. Saw it on Channel 5 news Phoenix.
So not much of a issue anymore.
Um... I'm pretty sure it is still an issue.
Discrimination against minorities is making a comeback; I find it very ominous that conservative municipal and state-level politicians and community leaders are now finding it politically advantageous to be openly racist.
I think its because the balance of power between races is starting to shift due to changes in demographics and white people will soon no longer be a majority vs all other races.
Yeah "red neck" is a word referring to, typically, ignorant southern racist poor white people. I'm not sure calling it a "racial slur" is accurate.
Unfortunately, they'll still be the privileged class and comprise the power structure, though.
I mean, whites weren't the "majority race" in the deep South during the 1800s, either.
Blacks outnumbered them many times over.
It doesn't mean whites weren't still perfectly capable of oppressing everyone around them.
They need not start up with their bull**** again; I don't care how much of a "minority" they become.
