During the naval engagement near the Falkland Islands which occurred early in World War I, the British gunners on battleships were surprised to see their accurately aimed salvos falling consistently 100 yards to the left of the German ships. What did the British sight makers fail to take into account?

Just a qualitative answer, and no googling permitted!

It was in the Southern Hemisphere.

specifcly its the fact that the coriolos force operates in the oposit direction in the southern hemisphere. In other words as far as the coriolis force in the south north is south and south is north (as far as the effect is concerned).
