After Cuts, a Kentucky Weather Office Scrambles for Staffing as Severe Storms Bear Down

Dunno if any of you have seen the devastation left behind from tornadoes in KY recently, but it looks way bad. Houses completely demolished down to the foundation.

Sadly, it seems there should be some questions because National Weather Service appears to have no overnight staff due to DOGE cuts.

This is trump an crew helping their republican base.

Ever heard of doing more with less?
Yes, from stupid business leaders who want more in their purses and not their workers pockets. Kid rock doesn't know how to do more with less. In order to avoid an ice raid he closed his restaurant because workers weren't showing up. Why didn't he do more with less?

What an idiotic statement, do more with less. If a farmer's tractor breaks down, do you think he is going to do more with less?

Living in Florida for thirty five years or so, I fear tornado season here much more than hurricane season. You know when hurricanes are approaching, with a tornado you get very little warning and yes, I have seen the damage they cause. One hit about five miles from where I live, it was stunning.

Hard to hide from a tornado when you don’t know it’s coming.

But hey 🤷‍♀️

MAGAs are fine with people dying. It was going to be an outcome, and they cheer this shit on anyway.

I hope that the government is able to help those who were affected. Some of those storms were very nasty and destructive. Tornadoes and severe weather in the Midwest can get very ugly very quickly. It can be terrifying.
I wonder if Trump denies the request to declare a federal emergency like he did to Arkansas. Beshear said this is the 13th significant natural disaster since he took office and he said the worst.

Sharpies resolve weather problems.

Trump is turning us into North Korea.

Trump is being bought by Saudi Arabia.
I wonder how many more jets and boats and cars and hotels Trump is being paid to ignore the atrocities in Middle East?

Beshere is a Democrat, so I'm sure Spineless Mike Johnson already called Trump to make sure Kentucky gets no federal relief.

I started a thread about the southern states and storm season. I don't think many MAGAs even responded.

They're probably scared to death.

I am thinking that local stations had their meteorologists working and I have read that the sirens were alarming. Not sure if that was t/o all of the affected area though.
They are reporting 27 people dead thus far. My heart goes out to everyone in this path of destruction.
I'm not ready to make any of it political.

I assume that he'll do whatever he perceives to benefit him in any given situation.

National WEATHER Service.

In America, the National WEATHER Service provides warnings during severe weather, like tornadoes.

Maybe they do it differently in Russia...
You dodged the question: "What critical service wasn't provided because of DOGE cuts?"

I guess whining about Russia in a Kentucky weather office thread is more important. 🤷‍♂️

They had to scramble to fill the positions for overnight weather tracking because DOGE cut the overnight position that existed before Trump and Musk and DOGE. It's a good thing they were professional enough to make it work, but still 27 people are dead and we may never know if the lack of personnel was part of this.

So they made it work with less staff. Efficiency. You're welcome.

That's not efficiency, that's flying by the seat of your pants.

Why? Because NYT used the word "scrambling?"
As a person who has worked in emergency situations at a workplace, I can tell you not having the right people at hand when you run equipment 24/7 is a recipe for disaster.

No one who expects 24/7 coverage should try to do it by eliminating people who work part of that 24/7.

What an utterly vague, irrelevant experience you have there!

So basically, yes, NYT used the word "scrambling" and triggered a liberal meltdown.

Very relevant. I worked as a maintenance manager at a boiler house/power house that provided vital services to the steel mill. We always had maintenance people around the clock for sudden breakdowns. To not have them in place could mean losses of thousands to millions of dollars.
So basically, yes, NYT used the word "scrambling" and triggered a liberal meltdown.

No, if you require 24/7 coverage but you don't have the personnel, then you do end up "scrambling" to get people to fill in the gaps in coverage.

You obviously don't understand how anything real works.

The NWS has SAID they are understaffed.

That the loyal meteorologists were able to come in and cover is a testament to their devotion to their profession.

Not a justification nor excuse for this administration and their haphazard cuts.

Proper staffing levels are vital.

I’m sorry you don’t understand this.

I'm certain the poster would had they lost their home or a loved one. Just like gutting Medicaid...unless Trumpers are affected directly they care nothing about the impact on others.

Yes let me re-read "scrambling" so I can reach your level of familiarity with this particular situation!
