A solution to illegal immigration

going to riot because the price of a head of lettuce increased?
i don't think so
maybe they substitute other greens that have not yet been impacted by the cheap labor shortage
or consumers/public substitute other food to replace the lettuce
given the wide availability of options and that lettuce is not a critical need, the gnashing of teeth would be just another pointless first world problem
the point you are missing, it ain't just lettuce, prices would go up significantly for apples, oranges, tomatoes, oh hell, the list is endless.
rioting NO, but I am sure no administrator wants to have to explain to their constituents WHY all those prices rose after they send illegals packing and had to hire more expensive American workers.
that is precisely WHY, while beating their chests, R's are just as unwilling as D's to really come down hard on illegal immigration.

Funny man

Actually Joe Manchin and Mitch McConnell are in control of congress not the Democrats.

Sure Joe Biden has an immigration plan. I don't think it includes Everify though. Anyway it's not going anywhere

Just like the infrastructure plan or the tax plan or H-1 voter rights plan or gun control

Biden's agenda is dead in the water
You’re quite the pessimist. ;)

Look at all good ole Joe has accomplished in under 100 days. He’s able to work across the aisle (he claimed in order to get elected). Have faith in him. Over 80+ million Americans did.

Send them all to Canada where systematic racism does not exist.
how about instead of crying, suggesting REAL solutions.

Instead of slagging, anyone have a REAL solution?

ANYONE?

thanks for a civil, well thought-out, and coherent response.

If only it was lettuce, fact is many crops are harvested by seasonal workers. Farmers will raise the cry to their politicians (ag does have a very strong pull on politicians) if their profits are left rotting in the field. Farmers lost market share when tRump's loser trade war blocked US Exports of farm products and China went to competitor nations for soybeans, cotton, and pork. Imagine the anger when Ag imports from other nations cut into market share here in the states by American's demand for produce, pork, chicken (remember most 'real' Americans loath working in freezing water to process the meat we enjoy)

But just curious- what are the other greens that won't be impacted by the loss of cheap (and willing to do the back breaking work) labor??? ✌️

i'm guessing you are one of those who hold the position that Americans would not do the jobs being performed by the illegals
and while it is true they would not do that work for the same low wage, they would do it for a fair wage
yep, food items would experience inflationary price increases
but Americans with limited skills would be earning wages that are closer to self-sustaining

Well let's back up and look at this from a different perspective.

Do we really have a problem?

i don't know, but substitution is a consumer response to inavailability of a non-essential item
hydrophonic farms might be able to offer consistent pricing for greens that the conventional farms could not match
but then the smart farmer, seeing a demand for his hydrophonic crop would likely impose an increase just below what conventional producers are receiving for their products

Americans are just not that hard working, actually neither are native Canadians, I ran my own landscaping business for 30 years, the hardest workers I had BY FAR were Muslim immigrants, so I hired mostly them because they worked twice as hard as the rest.

I DON'T THINK there is a real problem my OP question was for those who think THERE IS. They tend to whine about it, so I thought I would ask them to come up with solutions instead of whining.

You know a lot but you don't know the costs of producing crops. Hydroponics are THE most expensive way to produce greens. It is far more energy demanding than conventional field grown. More a boutique product like a Porsche instead of a Chevy- the current clients are very upscale restaurants, and the elite. There is no way hydroponics can take over for field crops, the quickest way is importing from Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil.

The American farmer will take it on the chin yet again... ✌️

We also need to crack down on legal immigration. If it were up to me 90% of unnaturalized aliens would have their green cards canceled and by sent home tommorow.

We should also totally repudiate all refugee agreements. We don’t need those people in America. One man’s “refugee” is another’s war criminal. Ilhan Omar’s dad was a communist military officer who was likely complicit in the war crimes of the Soviet backed Somali government. We got lots of “refugees” from Chile and Spain who were really party line marxists fleeing justice from their own people.

So I would end most legal immigration and totally end refugee admissions. People who are from high risk for visa overstay countries should have to post bonds in excess of 25,000 in US dollars with customs to be refunded on exit from the country.

Lol...

So basically cutting off the flow of illegals led to massive wage increases for farm workers. I bet you it farm work in California paid 25/hour with overtime and full benefits they’d have no problem recruiting people.
If that happened, you’d see the Colorado River flow full to Mexico and stil never reach the Pacific.

So not only would farm wages go up but we would end a long running diplomatic dispute with Mexico over water rights! Man the pluses of my position just keep coming.

Well, if you want the imperial valley to become desert again, yes. Point is, force US farmers to pay $25 an hour to lettuce pickers, you’ll see all lettuce grown in Mexico.

That’s what tariffs are for.

In any event you can use this argument for anything.

The minimum wage should be 35¢ per hour because otherwise all the clothes will be made in Vietnam is the same argument.

No, we don’t need to outsource factories nor important aliens from the third world. We can make it very expensive to trade over borders.

Besides your article cites vineyards paying 16 an hour and not finding people, and yet as someone who drinks a healthy share of wine I’ve not seen prices go up. So Nancy Pelosi the “public servant” only makes 70 million on her Napa estate instead of 85? What a shame. This will put her right in the poor house.

You want to bring in non white foreigners and exploit their back breaking labor so you can waste a vanity crop with no nutritional value? Sounds like left wing values in a nutshell.

What you don't understand is working in the hot sun doing stoop labor is hard work.

Even at $25 most Americans are just too soft to hold out in the fields. I don't think there will be many takers.

Most of the migrant farm workers are paid piece work. The production rate of these experienced field hands is 3 to 4 times what any American worker.

The Hispanic farm worker will never be replaced by Americans unless we give them status.
