Replace Catholic with any given minority race, or Muslim and I bet you would be singing a different tune.
Atheists don't have an organization systematically hiding them by moving them around and protecting them from prosecution.
With all this pedophilia going around like a sickness . . .why in the **** to parents TRUST these bastards?
I mean - come one - they're using the guise of "godliness" to violate children everywhere - and parents still are so wrapped up in their blind religious passion for 'god' that they don't worry, never stop to think about it, never just *not* trust these guys?
Talk about a mega failure to protect your children - horrible horrible parenting.
What about those pedophiles who are athiests? Does that cause you to hate athiests too?
Pedophiles come to you in all guises. They can be your neighbor, a teacher, a family friend, a relative, your boyfriend. Are you a horrible parent for letting your children come into contact with these people?
I don't hate the religion because some of the priests molested children. I hate the religion because instead of assisting the authorities in putting them in prison, they tried to cover it up (and had enough pull that they were successful for decades).
Exactly - so why are parents so blindly trusting of everyone these days?
I don't trust anyone - not even their teachers. . .I can't help but notice that every time a teacher or priest, etc etc, has one of these sick relationships with a child it is done so *out* of ordinary situations.
Like - teachers, for example, spend after-school-time with their students, etc.
So why do parents continue to let their children be involved with adults after-school hours, outside of regular church hours, etc?
Blame the agressors - but you have to be protective to avoid it.
I use to get a creepy feeling about my former neighbor. He lived across the street for a year before I ever even talked to him - and in hte first conversation I had with him he told me "the kids can come over and play with my dogs if they want. I'm not a monster"
- Um - do you think I let my kids EVER be NEAR him (before or after that?). NO F**KING WAY.
i understand that teenagers need to have a life without parents involved in everything - but a lot of these involved in these pedophilia things are NOT teenagers - they are children and the parents needed to be more vigilent and watchful.
What bothers me the most about this story is the collaboration by Irish police to HIDE and COVER UP this abuse, rather than prosecuting it legally. Horrifying.
The church is bad enough, but at this point, we've all pretty much recognized that the Catholic Church's policy on child sexual abuse is one of denial. But that they've co-opted law enforcement in covering up child sexual abuse is even worse, because these law enforcement officers are sworn to serve the public and enforce the law. I hope that those officers involved are removed from the force and prosecuted for aiding a criminal conspiracy.
On this we are agreed. This is something peculiarly catholic I suppose. Still, this is not a reason to brand all people of faith, any faith.
Of course not, but I'd be saying the same thing if the police did this in Utah for the LDS church. The perpetrators AND THOSE WHO COVERED UP FOR THEM are guilty of conspiracy, not to mention aiding/abetting felony child sexual assault. And frankly, until local law enforcement starts prosecuting these aiding/abetting charges, the Catholic church has an incentive to keep covering these things up, both for P.R. and financial reasons.
Yes, because we all know that the various Muslims on this board flood into threads that are about a random Muslim doing something horrendous that their response is
"I don't care"
Yes, I bet aps's tune would be the same if this was a muslim or a minority that was molesting a child and someone of the same group came in and said nothing but "I don't care".
Are you seriously thinking that people would suddenly be okay with people not caring about child rape as long as it wasn't done by a catholic?
Given enough time, and news reports, they will go far in rectifying this situation.
In point of fact pedophiles do work interact, trade information, pictures, and information. Look, I'm a teacher. You need to face the facts. The fact is pedophiles are drawn to those professions that put them into contact with the most potential victims. Put the blame where it belongs....on the perpetrator, not the profession.
Not all religions, just this one. I don't understand this part either. Baptists would just go to the cops. A generation ago they would simply have gone after the pepetrator. They would not have allowed this type of behavior to continue. Having said all that I think it's too simplistic to brand all religions, or even christians by the crimes of some who obviously aren't practicing christians.
Truthfully, it would only take a couple of prosecutions for aiding/abetting (fully valid, btw) to force their hand in cleaning up their act.
There is a history of this type of behavior going back centuries in the catholic church. Add to this the chronic priest shortage....and you have a recipe for disaster.
However, prosecutions would reinforce the fact that there is a price to be paid for covering up or abetting this sort of felony act. Clearly, at this point in time, the Catholic Church hierarchy assumes, quite accurately, that they can act with impunity. They need to be disabused of that notion.
I believe we're doing just that here in the us. I don't pretend to know whether or not if this is happening in ireland.
The Catholic Church has been abusing children and people since its conception.... as has most organised religions out there.
Lawsuits going on? I hope so.:2wave:
Celibacy ought to be optional, a special vow taken by someone who is in a closed retreat for the rest of his life. Or even temporary, a vow taken for a specific period of time.
I don't hate the religion because some of the priests molested children. I hate the religion because instead of assisting the authorities in putting them in prison, they tried to cover it up (and had enough pull that they were successful for decades).

If the archbishops knew, then it's fairly likely that the Pope knew."SOME" in authority tried covering it up. Let's get it straight now.
