9 murders already here in Austria, after just 6 weeks ...

... with the last one today: a 19-year old girl was found almost naked on an icy road in Upper Austria near a ski resort.

A man later called police that his brother had confessed the murder to him, after which a 18-year old was arrested. The girl was bludgeoned to death with a rod.

5 of the murder victims so far this year are women, 4 men.

4 were killed in Vienna and 1 each in Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Styria, Carinthia and Salzburg.

Here in Austria, the murder rate is very low - despite the tough start into the new year.

Usually, around 45-90 people get murdered per year, for a rate of 0.5 to 1 case per 100.000 people.

This year, if the pace keeps up, we will have a rate at the upper end of the longterm average.

Austria would still be the safest US state in terms of murders, because even New Hampshire (the safest) had a rate of 2 last year, and the US 8 per 100.000 people.

All victims but one were stabbed, strangled or bludgeoned to death. One was killed by a firearm.

That is 10% of murders by firearm vs. 80% in the US.

I looked for statistics and didn't find much, but I am absolutely certain that multiple murders happen every day here.

Detroit had 328 murders in 2022. That's one city.
