Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia

2/20/19
A spokesman for the Jehovah’s Witnesses has said that Russian investigators have brutally tortured adherents of the group who are currently held in detention. Russia’s Supreme Court declared the Jehovah’s Witnesses an extremist organization in 2017, leading to mass raids and causing hundreds of its estimated 175,000 members to flee the country. Earlier this month, a court in the city of Oryol convicted Dennis Christensen, a Danish Jehovah’s Witness, of extremism and sentenced him to 6 years behind bars, in a case that rights groups warned may trigger a crackdown on religious minorities. A spokesperson for the Jehovah’s Witnesses said Tuesday that investigators in the Siberian city of Surgut had stripped, suffocated, doused with water and applied stun guns on "at least seven" believers detained on extremism charges, days after criminal cases were reportedly initiated against 19 Jehovah's Witnesses following mass raids.

“The agents stripped the men naked, put a bag over each suspect’s head and wrapped it with tape. Agents then tied each suspect’s hands behind his back, smashed his fingers, and beat him on his neck, feet and kidney,” Jarrod Lopes, a spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses at their world headquarters in New York, told The Moscow Times by email Tuesday. Lopes said members of the Investigative Committee in Surgut “poured water over the men, shocked them with a stun gun in the anus area—gradually increasing the strength of the shock.” The victims were reportedly asked to disclose information about their meetings and leadership during the interrogation. A Surgut court placed three of the alleged victims of torture in custody pending trial for two months, with an estimated 250 local Jehovah’s Witnesses members in the cross-hairs of the authorities. European Association of Jehovah’s Witnesses representative Yaroslav Sivulsky called the alleged tortures “a desperate and unconscionable attempt by Russian law enforcement to manufacture evidence of alleged criminal activities.”

Reading this brings tears to my eyes, RV...we are such a threatening group of people...:(...I pray Jehovah gives them the strength to endure..

Stalin could not break them. Putin cannot break them. Witnesses persevere.

Bad conditions have to occur according to scripture...I will continue to pray for my brothers endurance...

Considering they torture and kill children, then I have zero sympathy.

Russian Court Releases Remaining Two Brothers From Detention in Surgut
On April 9, 2019, the Surgut City Court ordered the release of Brothers Yevgeniy Fedin and Sergey Loginov from pretrial detention. This denied the request by Russian authorities to extend their detention. Although the criminal charges against both brothers are still under investigation, they were allowed to leave the detention center on April 11.

Brothers Fedin and Loginov had been detained since February 15, 2019, when they were arrested following mass home raids in the city of Surgut. On that occasion, authorities initiated criminal cases against a total of 19 Witnesses. Three of them, Yevgeniy and Sergey, along with Brother Artur Severinchik, were ordered to remain in pretrial detention. Artur was released earlier on March 15.

During the February raids, law enforcement officers tortured seven of our brothers, including Brother Loginov. A complaint regarding this abusive treatment has been filed with the European Court of Human Rights. The complaint is still under consideration.

We are confident that Jehovah will continue to demonstrate that he is paying close attention to our prayers as he strengthens our faithful brothers and sisters in Russia.—Psalm 10:17.

On Wednesday, the Russian investigative committee in Siberia's Khanty-Mansiysk region said the claim made by the men was an "attempt to influence the investigation and is aimed at discrediting the security forces," the BBC's Sarah Rainsford reports from Moscow.

In a statement, the committee said its initial investigation had found that "active resistance" during a search of the men's homes in February resulted in "minor abrasions and bruising".

It also claimed that forensic tests showed other injuries, including burns, which "could not have been caused" in custody "but were created later".

Previously, medical certificates shown to the BBC by the alleged victims said their burns were "consistent with electric shock". A new forensic report commissioned by their lawyers has confirmed that the injuries do correspond with the date of their arrest.

Probably the injuries were caused by their "active resistance" during a search of the men's homes. Their lawyers confirmed that the injuries do correspond with the date of their arrest. In Russia, taser weapons are used to neutralize offenders from a distance of several meters, which may have resulted in their burns.

The "active resistance" is untrue...the committee lies...

i thought they only hurt people by shuning and killed them by convincing them that blood transfusions are bad

sure they want everyone who wont follow ther faith dead at the hands of ther god so no reason to be sorry of someone kills them

but this alleged behavior at the hands of russian authorities increases the risk of torture and death for every one

and just feeds the persecution complex of the witnesses

I've used a taser, and I've had one used on me.

The 200 micro-amps generally do not cause skin burns, and if there should be any skin burns, they are extremely localized and superficial.

Burns caused by electrodes placed on body parts (electric shocks) are far more likely to occur as are cigarette burns on the skin.

By far the most common injury from a taser is a barb breaking off under the skin or lodged in the spine. Both require medical attention.

I've posted many threads about physical torture in the Russian detention/penal system. Usually under questioning in pre-trial detention facilities.

Good news! Trump said Putin knew nothing about this.

That's because Putin said so...:2razz:

“ This certainly does not mean that we should label representatives of religious communities as members of destructive, much less terrorist, organizations. That is complete nonsense; this needs to be dealt with carefully...”

“Jehovah’s Witnesses are Christians too, and I don’t quite understand why they are persecuted either. So this should be looked into; this must be done.”— President Vladimir Putin’s comments at a meeting of the Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, December 11, 2018.

...Are you seriously defending police brutality? That's an abuse of power and its disgusting and indefensible. I don't care if its Russian cops torturing people via state-backed persecution Sturmabteilung-style, or American cops shooting unarmed surrending black people or beating a homeless man to death like some kind of horrendous Neo-Confederate/KKK Hybrid Gang, its ****ing awful and gross.
