1. Three Days of the Condor.

2. Shawshank Redemption.

3. Forrest Gump.

4. Life of Brian.

5. Saving Private Ryan.

Gladiator: Nuff said

Heartbreak Ridge: nostalgic

My Neighbor Totoro: do not bother with anime, any anime, except this one.

28 Days Later: one of the scariest, and possibly smartest, horror movies ever.

And a late entry - The Shoplifters (Manbiki Kazoku): dark but heartwarming.

I'll go ahead and recommend unfamiliar/foreign films:

1. Come and See (Russian)
2. City of God (Brazil)
3. Wages of Fear (France)
4. Ran (Japan)
5. Crumb (US)

I've seen three of those. Come and See was an eye opener. Saw it at a Russian film festival in '87 or '88 when I was a teenager. Till then I didn't know enough about the Russian side of the war.

5 Movies You Would Recommend a Friend See

great thread idea.

there are some good recommendations so far, so i will probably repeat a few.

Pulp Fiction
Forrest Gump
Shawshank Redemption
Reservoir Dogs (but read about it first.)

the one that jumped out for a recommendation that someone else might not list is The Man From Earth. wonderful film, and you might not have heard of it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_from_Earth

it has a really interesting premise, it is dialogue based, well written, and the actors are really good. i rented it on a whim, enjoyed it, and then bought the DVD.

I have been stewing about this thread for a day now, and I still cant formulate an answer. If I knew which friend I could answer it in a heartbeat, but since I dont know the audience I dont know how I am supposed to know what they should see. What is the yardstick that gets used here...Am I supposed to guess what would enlighten them the most?.....is it the most creative use of the medium?....Am I supposed to push what I believe in?

I cant figure this out.....which likely means that Helix is right again that this thread is a good idea.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! :2dancing:

I'm also finding it difficult. What I might recommend to a friend would likely be different than what I liked the most. A movie for a friend would have to be interesting to the contemporary viewer, no matter how "great" it was during its time. On the other hand, there are a few that have remained great. So what the heck, I'll suggest several themed list of five movies that I loved:

American Culture & History Themed:

Gone With the Wind (Greatest American Film Ever Made)
To Kill a Mockingbird
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
On the Beach
On the Waterfront

More American Culture & History Themed:

Last Picture Show
Saving Private Ryan
West Side Story
The Magnificent Seven
Patton
Maltese Falcon

Greatest Sci Fi

Blade runner (original)
The Empire Strikes Back
Alien(s) (one and two)

Other Must See Greats:

Dr. Zhivago
Shindler's List
Cabaret
Amadeus
Ladykillers (original)
Breaker Morant

Okay, that is a lot more than five, but all these moved me greatly - so there it is.

I was thinking as I was walking SINJIN THE WONDER PUP around the hood as fabulous fireworks were going off to ring in the new year that maybe what I should go by are picking the 5 most valuable hidden gems in cinema...stuff that is really good that no one hardly ever sees.

~ If I knew which friend I could answer it in a heartbeat ~

Probably the kind of friend you would recommend movies to? You'd probably know which friends like movies and which friends are go-to friends who would have your back in any troublesome situation but they might not be the same type of friend. Then there's best buddies who don't watch films but are good to be around and go fishing / have a beer with.

I can think of several friends who I know love movies that if I had a list - would pass it on to.

Hey! Now you are thinking!

That helps!

Five movies that blew my socks off that have also stood up till now:

1) Blade Runner...the real one

2) The Big Chill

3) Good Will Hunting

4) Wall Street.

5) Norma Rae

Big important stories that are well told is the theme.

I am going with the mix tape theory...these are movies that will give insight into who I am....these are the movies that have mattered most in my life....this is what resonates with me....this is the list I give my friends so that they might deepen their understanding of me.

How about 5 films you’d tell a group of friends to see, while shooting the **** and having a few beer.

A... LOL... “collective”... LOL.

Happy New Year!
