So I got into a good discussion with my roommate today, and she is basically going to vote 3rd party. I honestly think that is like throwing your vote away - it has the same consequence as not voting in the first place. She then said, if everyone thought third party was a viable choice, then it is probable that the third party would win. I said I think she is right.

I don't vote third party because I don't think it can win. There are a multitude of reasons why, and why others would think that, but I got to go to work pretty soon.

My questions are these:

  1. If every person who wanted to vote for third party actually voted for it, do you think there would be adequate support to win the nomination?
  2. What is your take as to why people don't vote third party when in actuality they want to?
  3. What would needed be done to convince the American public that a third party is a worthwhile vote? Because I believe there are many Americans who want to vote third party, but choose not to do so because the third party is going to lose anyway.

I think the media has a huge part in this. The liberals have a lot of news outlets biased towards them, while conservatives have Fox News. There is no popular media outlet that I know of for another point of view besides republican and democrat. Personally I would of voted third party if I believed it was worthwhile. This would be a perfect example as to why we need a third party.

So, what say ye?

I'm not going to lie, your view bothers the hell out of me. What kind of sense does this make?

"I don't vote third party because I don't think it can win."

So you say you vote for who you think will win. What kind of logic is that? You vote for what you want or else the political landscape will always look like something you don't want.

That said, I think most Americans think the way you do but if they got off their asses and voted for what they wanted, the political landscape would look a helluva lot different and third parties would inundate the government.

The only vote thrown away is a vote for someone you do not like because they are the lesser of two evils.

I'm with Rob here but this is pretty funny.

The only vote thrown away is a vote for someone you do not like because they are the lesser of two evils.

And the votes that can be but are not cast at all.

I'm almost 60 and in all of my years of voting there was always one major party candidate who was slightly better or worse than the other (I'm an Independent) so I was always in the mindset that a third party vote was a wasted vote. This election cycle has changed my mind, not that I think a third party can actually win, but because both candidates are so bad in various ways there is no one candidate who is better or worse than the other. I have decided to vote for someone this election instead of feeling bad about who I voted for so I am voting for who I have wanted all along - John Kasich.
