Due to the inaction of state and federal officials, thousands of people in Flint have been exposed to unsafe levels of lead in their water. Now a group of union plumber are taking matters into their own hands.
On Saturday, 300 plumbers from unions across the country descended on Flint to install new faucets and water filters for free.

The effort was coordinated by the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry, known as the United Association. The fixtures were donated by the Plumbing Manufacturers International.
For some in Flint, however, even new faucets with modern water filters won’t be enough to fully abate the lead contamination. New tests released recently revealed that, in some Flint homes, the levels of lead “exceed the ability of filtration systems handed.” The filters can safely remove up to 150 parts per billion of lead. Some Flint homes were found to have lead levels of more than 4,000 parts per billion.

Great move and a good effort by those doing the installs. Also a great PR move by the union. I'm sure they don't want anyone to realize that union workers built and maintained the Flint water system to begin with.

They installed the pipe and fittings provided by the city. What else could they do?

Fill us in.

The union didn't make the switch, city managers did. And it's not PR - it's community service. Unions routinely volunteer:

Community Services

AFL-CIO unions and our members are committed partners in our communities, which leads many to volunteering in a range of community services—from charitable giving to running programs that help families in economic or personal crises. The AFL-CIO has an extensive Community Services Network with more than 160 full-time liaisons who link their state and local labor councils with the United Way and Red Cross chapters in communities across the country. The liaisons coordinate services for those suffering from natural disasters, financial hardship, illness, joblessness, mortgage foreclosure and other difficulties.

They didn't make the DECISION for the switch, but it wasn't city managers who did the switch, nor were the city managers the ones monitoring and maintaining the system. The people who actually did the work, the job - union.

Hmmm, filtering lead out of water? That would be along the lines of reverse osmosis. RO water isn't good for you for daily consumption. It's Better than lead water but it will be missing lots of beneficial ions and trace elements. It becomes so aggressive that it must be piped in cpvc or pex piping. It will dissolve copper or iron pipe from the inside out.

I don't think that is correct. The workers may have been Union members but we're employed by the municipality. The union doesn't have authority with concerns to water quality, only in collective bargaining with its members and signatory employers.

You would think that they could have reported the contamination that was found to the Mich Dept of Health though.

Wrong again. Unions had ZERO to do with the decision to switch. Them pulling the switch, under orders, not knowing what the outcome would be in no way makes the union responsible for what happened.

I concur, but who is saying they didn't.
My point is that the union isn't responsible for water quality. The municipality is.

I agree on both points, I don't know enough about this to know if it was reported and ignored and yes ultimately the municipality is responsible.

Yeah, and I wonder if they let any non union plumbers participate. ;)
