1970 Southern Man released. 1974 Sweet Home Alabama released. Even fifty years ago this was the gop's supporters'thinking.

It's not racist they say, it's our tradition.

So here are the words of a 'woke' song and the words of an apparently conservative song.

Southern Man

Southern man, better keep your head
Don't forget what your good book said
Southern change gonna come at last
Now your crosses are burning fast
Southern man
I saw cotton and I saw black
Tall white mansions and little shacks
Southern man, when will you pay them back?
I heard screamin' and bullwhips cracking
How long? How long? How?
Southern man, better keep your head
Don't forget what your good book said
Southern change gonna come at last
Now your crosses are burning fast
Southern man
Lily Belle, your hair is golden brown
I've seen your black man comin' round
Swear by God I'm gonna cut him down
I heard screamin' and bullwhips cracking
How long? How long? How?

Sweet Home Alabama

They got loose to you
Here it comes
Oh, whoa-whoa
Big wheels keep on turnin'
Carry me home to see my kin
Singin' songs about the Southland
I miss Alabamy once again, and I think it's a sin, I said
Well, I heard Mr. Young sing about her
Well, I heard old Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern man don't need him around, anyhow
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm comin' home to you
One thing I wanna tell you
In Birmingham, they love the governor (boo, boo, boo!)
Now we all did what we could do
Now Watergate does not bother me, uh-uh
Does your conscience bother you? Tell the truth
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama (oh, my baby)
Lord, I'm comin' home to you (here I come, Alabama)
Speak your mind
Ah-ah-ah (can you feel that?), Alabama
Ah-ah-ah, Alabama
Ah-ah-ah, Alabama
Ah-ah-ah, Alabama
Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've been known to pick a song or two (yes, they do)
Lord, they get me off so much
They pick me up when I'm feelin' blue, now how 'bout you?
Sweet home Alabama (oh)
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm comin' home to you
Sweet home Alabama (home, sweet home, baby)
Where the skies are so blue (and the governor's, too)
Sweet home Alabama (Lord, yeah)
Lord, I'm comin' home to you (whoo, whoa, yeah, oh)
Alright, brother, now
Wait one minute
Oh-oh, sweet Alabama
Thank you

Sweet Home Alabama is not racist. And they weren't wrong.
Weird that this thread was posted. This morning the Southern Man was on the radio. I was thinking about Sweet Home Alabama after it was over, as I like both songs.
Reading the lyrics to both without jumping to conclusions is a good way to really try to understand what they were both saying.

A 1970 protest song? No ****ing way! I was sure that between 1965 and 1980 there were ZERO protest songs and especially none about race. My eyes have been opened!!

WTF? Why are you kids rooting around in grandpa's attic and what are you playing those records on? You'll never understand them.

Okay, now we've stepped off into the abyss...
