12-Foot, Overweight Black Woman Statue Erected In Times Square As 'Contrast' To 'White Men' Hero Statues (1 Viewer)

Maybe. Here in Houston there are Picasso sculptures in the Museum of Fine Arts. A fair bit of time an money went into those, but I don't see any motivations behind them except the art (and maybe the desire of the artist to earn a living).

I don't fully understand your last sentence, sorry.
What do you mean by "art"?

What makes you think Picasso works are "art" and why is this statue "art"?

Or is your point about making a living really more relevant, and this is all about money?

Yes. Its like if you have to explain a joke, its not really all that funny. It sort of yells out that there are no actual black men or women who have done anything to be worthy of a statue of their own.
Is this a staute of someone who has done something worthy of a statue?

The first definition from the Oxford Languages dictionary works fine for me:

[quote}
1.
the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
"the art of the Renaissance"[/quote]

I don't know precisely what you mean by "this" in your last question. If you mean art in general, earning a living comes into it but I don't see it as the primary motivator.

I suspect it would be defaced because people see Trump as an authoritarian and a threat to democracy.
Well that's unfortunate I guess.

But peaceful, destructive protest of this statue, if it happens, will be another thing New Yorkers do.

No, I was referring to the "emotional power" part of your definition.

What makes this piece "emotionally powerful.", in the artist's eyes, viewers eyes or anyone else's.

Mmmm... The word "this" I was asking about was in the post that preceded my post, in which I quoted the definition I had found. I'm having trouble seeing how it could be referring to something in the definition itself, since that had not yet been posted.

I don't think anyone has ever defined exactly how any piece of art achieves "beauty or emotional power" (to quote the definition again).

Of course they have. That's what makes art different from not art.

If you can't find a beautiful or emotional element to this statue, then it is probably not art.

Personally, I don’t much care about this issue. But I would suggest that if you’re gong to erect a statue of a Black woman, then do one that really existed. There are many great Black women you could make a monument to, i.e. Sojourner Truth, Ida Wells Barnett, Mary McLeod Bethune, Fannie Lou Hamer, etc.

Nope. Thats why people are wondering why its there.
What did this pigeon do that earned it a statue in NYC?
