"To promote reopening less than three months after the tragedy — while one camper remains missing — is unthinkable," wrote CiCi and Will Steward, whose 8-year-old daughter Cile Steward has not been found. "Our families remain trapped in the deepest throes of grief, yet your communications treat our never-ending nightmare as little more than a brief pause before resuming business as usual."
“Unthinkable”: Camp Mystic parents condemn reopening plans after devastating floods
The family of the only girl who remains missing after the July 4 flood wants a halt to all discussions of reopening and memorials to the 27 campers and staff who were killed.www.texastribune.org
Jesus. Are they gonna rebuild in the flood zones where the campers were killed??
Of course they’ll put it right back there.
they’ll be open again by spring.
And people will send their kids there.
Americans are stupid.
New rules will prevent that, but in the words of one mother...they'll be swimming in the same river that still has the body of my daughter.“Unthinkable”: Camp Mystic parents condemn reopening plans after devastating floods

I feel for the parents. I have children who have children and I can't imagine having to deal with the loss of a child or a grandchild. Realistically, that camp is most likely going to open. The conditions under which it does reopen are important. Obviously the position of the cabins should be moved to higher ground. I don't know if the area allows for that or not. If it doesn't then reopening is a real issue. Looking at the flood plain history is also a must. The structures need to be outside of the historic flood area. Once done, and not until then should the camp reopen.“Unthinkable”: Camp Mystic parents condemn reopening plans after devastating floods

It's screwed up that they can't wait until the first anniversary has past.
This is not recreational use, this is a for profit business that cut corners on little kids safety and 27 drowned. If everyone had to wait a year after a drowning to utilize the Mississippi for recreation, it would severely restrict recreational opportunities on the Mississippi River.
There was a guy missing in the river near here for a couple months this summer. By the time they found him, the decomposition was such they couldn't identify him from dental records. The sandbars were still packed every weekend, and water sports continued apace.
Read it.You should both read the article.
Read it.
They’re going to put the camp back in the flood plain.
Just move the cabins a bit.
And plan to have it open for the 2026 season.
Over the objection of the families of the dead and still missing camper.
Because they do not care. It’s all about $$$
Actually, the crux of the matter is making plans to reopen while there is still one 8-year-old girl’s body who has not been recovered. If you put yourself in the parent’s shoes, no matter the reason their daughter was there in the first place at the time of the flash floods, then making these plans comes off as an insensitive and cruel act.I don't see the big deal. Local parents were fine sending young girls into a flood plain that had surged before, and that had drowned children before, so they'll just go back to doing it again. The crux of the matter here is that if parents do not want to see their family lineage removed from the gene pool, then they need to not put their children in harm's way.

Find the body first. That should be the only effort taking place at this time.

They may never find the body.
It has been a long time. Decomposition has occurred and scavengers may have had at the remains.
There may not even be a body to recover at this point.

You can at least make a feeble attempt to stay on the subject here. Is that too difficult of a task for you? This isn’t about the Mississippi River, so why bring it up? Is it your only point of reference in order for you to try to relate to the subject at hand and argue with others?Should the Mississippi River be closed to recreation as long as anyone is missing?

This is about the rush to reopen Camp Mystic where there’s still one little girl’s body not recovered. Good grief…

This. Even if they're trapped in a building or a car, the scour will haul them out and drag them along with the debris until they look like a pork sausage.Just seeing if you had a consistent principle or a convenient opinion. That being that rivers should be closed to recreational activities until any drowning victims have been recovered.
Now I know. It's just an opinion of convenience.
BTW, it's doubtful the body would be found at Camp Mystic. (If there's anything left to find.) Drowning casualties in rivers are generally found downstream.

If individuals go swimming I've got no issue. If you just want to prop up a revenue stream...I do.
